In 1943, the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) was formed, granting women full military status, rank and benefits. It was estimated that about 150,000 women served in the WAAC/WAC during the war, about 4% of whom were African-American.

During World War II, 855 women of color were deployed overseas. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the first and only all women battalion to serve on foreign soil. Their task: to sort through hangars filled with a backlog of millions of pieces of mail and care packages left in England. While enduring segregation and inhumane conditions, such as no heat in frigid weather and a rodent infestation, they accomplished this major feat in 3 months. Higher ups were so impressed, the battalion was relocated to France, where they did it again! Through 24 hour operations, 7-day work weeks, and no automatic machinery, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion helped raise morale for 7 million soldiers stationed around Europe.

Upon their return to America there was no parade, no recognition, no show of gratitude for their great achievements or sacrifices. Their story remained in the shadows until 2009. The last 3 surviving women of the 6888th were honored in a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery for their courage, perseverance and selfless service to a country that did not value them.

Their commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams-Earley was the highest ranking black woman that served during World War II. In April 2023, Fort Lee Virginia was renamed Fort Gregg-Adams in our honor of two outstanding officers that paved the way for Black people in the military.
