𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗢𝗩
A novel about God and the Devil might be expected to begin with heaven and hell. 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘃 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸.
God wants to check in – and already his name causes difficulties. No initials. No parents. And somehow, he simply does not fit into the neat categories of an ordinary registration form.
Ustinov needs only a few lines to bring the divine face to face with bureaucracy. The joke is gentle, but precise: even eternity has trouble with a form designed for ordinary mortals.
And this is only the beginning. God and Mr Smith – the Devil – set out together to see the world for themselves, observing how people live, behave and make sense of the world around them.
Published in 1990, The Old Man and Mr Smith shows Ustinov at his most characteristic: witty, observant and wonderfully alert to the absurdities hidden in everyday life.
With The Literary Ustinov, we turn the spotlight on another facet of Sir Peter: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿.
