The EU Horizon ‘NaturaConnect’ project brought main partners together in building a resilient ecological network of conserved areas across Europe for nature and people. The initiative aims to support countries in designing and developing a blueprint for a truly coherent Trans-European Nature Network (TEN-N) of conserved areas that protect at least 30% of land, with at least one third of it under strict protection, and to restore 20% of ecosystems to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

Expansion of protected areas to cover at least 30% of the land area is recommended to effectively conserve biodiversity. The mediterranean biogeographic region has significant potential for expanding strict protected areas.

Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania

Successful nature conservation starts with listening to the people who live in close daily contact with nature and know it best. Guided by this principle, the Macedonian Ecological Society (MES) launched fieldwork this summer in the village of Belica, located within the Ilinska–Plakenska–Bigla ecological corridor in western .

The work began with a participatory workshop to map the corridor's natural resources, marking the start of the project "Living Landscapes: Restoring Ecological Corridors for Wildlife and Communities," funded by with support from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM).

Over the next three years, the project will carry out a range of activities across two key ecological corridors- Ilinska-Plakenska-Bigla and Stogovo-Karaorman-Jablanica - to plan restoration efforts, strengthen ecological connectivity, and conserve the natural values found there.
