Dear friends and supporters,
After nearly eight years of running one of the largest community centres supporting refugees on the Greek islands, we have made the difficult decision to close the All4Aid Centre on Lesvos, Greece.
When we began our work on Lesvos, around 5,000 people were living in the refugee camp. At the height of the crisis, that number rose to more than 20,000. Over the past few months, however, the situation has changed significantly. Today, approximately 200 people remain in the camp, and living conditions and access to services inside the camp have improved considerably.
We are grateful for these positive developments. They also mean that such a costly and large-scale operation like ours outside the camp is no longer needed. After careful consideration, we have concluded that closing the Centre and investing our resources where there are greater needs is the most responsible way to steward what has been entrusted to us.
While the Centre itself is now closed, our work on Lesvos is not ending immediately. Some of our equipment will remain there, and a couple of team members will remain engaged with the work on the island for the coming months, supporting other organisations and helping us carefully discern the next steps as we explore where our experience and resources can best serve displaced people in the next chapter of All4Aid’s work in Greece.
Closing the Centre is bittersweet. Over nearly eight years, thousands of people have passed through its doors, finding practical support, friendship, dignity, community and hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
We are deeply grateful to every staff member and volunteer who served with compassion and commitment, and to every partner, church and supporter who prayed, gave and stood alongside us.
We are also grateful to the many people who came through our doors and trusted us to walk alongside them for part of their journey in such a critical time of their lives. They did not simply receive from this community; their stories, friendship, courage and generosity helped shape us.
Above all, we are grateful to God for the opportunity to serve and to share His love in such practical ways with tens of thousands of people, for many of whom their time with us was one of their first meaningful encounters with the Western world.
Lesvos has been our longest-running programme and, for many years, a defining part of All4Aid’s work. Its closure marks the end of a very important chapter for us, but not the end of our commitment to people in need and those who have been displaced.
As needs change, we want to have the courage and the agility to change with them — going where we are needed and using the resources entrusted to us wisely.
We close this chapter with deep gratitude for all that has been, and with hope for what is still to come. Our commitment remains the same: to stand alongside people in need and those who have been displaced, wherever we believe we can serve most meaningfully.
