Morsbags (www.morsbags.com) is a non-profit online organisation which makes and gives away cotton shopping bags to the general public for FREE. It is a sad fact that over one million plastic bags are consumed by wildlife per minute globally. Marine wildlife mistake plastic bags for food and die. Supermarkets and politicians will take years to sort this problem out. Making Morsbags will help, with
immediate effect. Morsbags Aims and Methods:
* To make reusable bags, sociably!
* Reaching targets in order to make it worth distributing the bags guerilla-style and free to shoppers.
*Making it a habit to take a Morsbag or reusable bag to the shops.
*Accelerating the reusable bag campaign where supermarkets and politicians seem to be dragging their feet.
* Doing something positive to prevent marine and other wildlife from dying, plastic bags wedged in their guts. Who can make Morsbags? Anyone who can use a sewing machine! If you don't have a machine, you could still help by making patterns up for other pod members. We can also help teach people how to use a machine. Is it hard work/Is it worth it? There is no pressure in our pod, you make bags at your own pace. A couple of times a year, a date will be set to go guerilla-bagging in town, or outside supermarkets and the aim will be to have a set amount of bags made by each date to make the trip worth it. It is an excuse to get people together but simultaneously, to create something important. Your effort will be worth it and it is a damn sight speedier than waiting for the shops or politicians to do something about the problem. What do I need? You will need access to a sewing machine, a table to work on, donated or recycled fabric, a bag template (available on the Morsbags website), pins, sharp scissors, measuring tape, dressmakers chalk and Morsbags labels. The labels are available to purchase from the Morsbags website for a nominal fee. They charge for the labels so they can order more. They are necessary to identify the bags we make. If you are unable to help us make the bags, you may be able to help us by donating any of the following:
*Fabric (donated or recycled sheets, bedsets, towels, curtains, tablecloths, etc)
*Supplies (pins, scissors, chalk, etc)
