We are delighted to announce the launch of the EUFEPS Mentoring Program 2026—a unique European initiative designed to support the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists through one-to-one mentoring.

The six-month program brings together early-career researchers and experienced professionals from academia, industry, and public administration to foster professional growth, knowledge exchange, and meaningful connections across the pharmaceutical community.

Whether you are:

🔹 a postdoctoral researcher looking to shape your career, or

🌍 Nexa Funding Opportunity

Nexa is a climate and health initiative co-led by Grand Challenges Canada and the Science for Africa Foundation, in collaboration with a global consortium of partners and funders. The initiative supports locally led innovations that address the growing health impacts of climate change.

📢 Current Call for Proposals

Projects must directly address at least one of the following focus areas:

🔹 Climate-informed early warning and monitoring systems

Innovations that enable health actors to anticipate and respond to the impacts of heat, poor air quality, and/or changing mosquito ecology, including the accelerated spread of malaria and dengue infections.

🏆 Celebrating Excellence at the EUFEPS–SITELF Joint Annual Meeting PhD Competition

We are delighted to present the first-place winner of this year's PhD Competition, recognizing exceptional early-career researchers and their outstanding contributions to pharmaceutical sciences.

🥇 Monika Prašnikar (Slovenia)

Presentation: Overcoming high viscosity in concentrated monoclonal antibody formulations using novel excipients

Monika Prašnikar graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, in 2022 and is currently pursuing her PhD at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pegi Ahlin Grabnar and the co-supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mirjam Gosenca Matjaž.

Her research focuses on formulation strategies for the subcutaneous administration of protein and peptide drugs, with particular emphasis on developing novel viscosity-reducing excipients for highly concentrated monoclonal antibody formulations, as well as liquid crystalline nanoparticles for the sustained release of peptide therapeutics.

Her work has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the International Journal of Pharmaceutics and the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, and she has presented her research at major international conferences. Alongside her scientific achievements, Monika is actively involved in teaching and science outreach, helping to promote public engagement with science and health.

Congratulations to Monika Prašnikar on this well-deserved first place and on her inspiring contributions to pharmaceutical research. We wish her continued success in her scientific career!

🥈 2nd Place – Nico Boback (Germany)

Presentation title: “Quantifying protein assembly and inhibition – label-free drug discovery by mass photometry”

Nico Boback is a fourth-year PhD candidate in Chemistry at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) in the research group of Prof. Daniel Lauster. His research focuses on protein–protein interactions in health and disease, investigating the regulation of protein assembly and its modulation by bioactive compounds using quantitative biophysical methods. He applies label-free mass photometry to quantitatively characterize protein assembly and disassembly pathways at the single-molecule level.

In his recent first-author work published in Protein Science (Boback et al., 2025), and through his contributions to a related study in ChemBioChem (Gorenflos López et al., 2023), Nico employed mass photometry to investigate the assembly behavior and inhibitor-induced disruption of human UDP-GlcNAc 2-epimerase. By directly measuring protein stoichiometries and assembly states in solution, his research provides mechanistic insight into protein complex regulation and supports the development of quantitative assays for pharmaceutical research and drug discovery.

🥉 3rd Place – Marloes Pennings (The Netherlands)

Presentation title: “Molecular glues of the regulatory ChREBP/14-3-3 complex protect beta cells from glucolipotoxicity”
Marloes Pennings is a final-year PhD candidate in the Chemical Biology group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), supervised by Prof. Luc Brunsveld. Her research focuses on developing molecular glues that stabilize protein–protein interactions (PPIs) involving the hub protein 14-3-3. By investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying cooperative PPI stabilization, she aims to advance the rational design of selective 14-3-3 molecular glues. Her work has contributed to the development of molecular glues targeting the 14-3-3/ChREBP interaction, demonstrating their potential to rescue pancreatic β-cells from glucolipotoxicity. In addition to small-molecule approaches, she has explored the use of macrocycles as molecular glues to stabilize the 14-3-3/ChREBP interaction. More recently, she contributed to studies on the 14-3-3/C-RAF complex, where molecular glues were developed to promote the auto-inhibited state of C-RAF and suppress MAPK signaling. She is currently finalizing her PhD research and hopes to successfully defend her thesis in October this year.
