In the town of Dostpur, Sultanpur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, there is a group of 8-10 families migrated from somewhere and settled there. They are called “Dharikar”, a community of lower cast people in northern India (Uttar Pradesh). They live in huts made of stra
w on someone’s land on the roadside in unhygienic conditions. In the monsoon season, they must wrap their hut with plastic so that no water should come inside from the roof. They have no furniture, no bed mattress, no toilets, no door, they cook food on a wood fire. They are here for the last 20-25 years, but till now they don’t have any documents, no house, no land, no help from the government (as they don’t have any documents). They do bamboo works and mostly making bamboo baskets with hand. These baskets had a multiple-use before, traditionally used in farming and household works for storing grains, etc. But because of modernization in farming, the use of such baskets had reduced considerably. That’s the reason why they sometimes have to comprise with hunger or take private loans from others get trapped in loan debt for a long time. For manufacturing bamboo baskets, they take loans from shopkeepers to buy raw materials like bamboo and other materials. Then they do hard work of preserving bamboos in water, peeling, cleaning, crafting, coloring, drying, etc. And once the basket is ready, they give it back to the shopkeeper for selling. The shopkeeper gives some amount to them if those baskets get sold. During the 1st corona pandemic lockdown, they were the ones from mostly affected people. Thanks to some good people in society, they at least got cooked food once-twice a day. But during the second pandemic, the situation was worst. Even normal town people were suffering badly from corona, Dharikar people had no option left. How are going to help them:
1. Our priority is to provide them food. But we want they should be doing
something to become independent and earn for their family, so we have a different plan. We have planned to help them by supplying the raw materials for making those baskets and buying as many as a possible basket from them directly without/least middleman in between. We will try to sell those baskets in European Market, especially in Germany. The profit after selling the basket will be used again for Dharikar people for their further wellbeing.
2. Education is very necessary for the development of a society. That’s why, we are planning to provide their children them all the necessary things like schoolbooks, bags, clothes, shoes, etc so that they go to school. We will also be providing them a private tutor who will not only teach them but also motivate them to for education. We will make sure then the children go to school, and they should not push into forced labor.
3. Our next goal is here to plan something for their living space. Currently, they live in road transport land along the side of the road. We will plan for small houses for them by renting or other means in the nearby area.
