KARTA: An Annotated Digest of Ukrainian Decolonial Thought
We are proud to present KARTA, a transnational cultural and educational project developed by Dialogkraft Europa e.V. (Frankfurt am Main) in close cooperation with our Ukrainian partners Vinnytsia Regional Universal Scientific Library named after Valentyn Otamanovskyi and the Vinnytsia Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Library Association.
KARTA is more than a publication — it is a knowledge platform, a dialogue space, and a tool for cultural decolonization.
What is KARTA about?
At its core, KARTA is an annotated digest that brings together key texts, concepts, and thinkers shaping Ukrainian decolonial discourse. It offers carefully curated excerpts and contextual explanations that make complex ideas accessible to a broad german-speacking audience, including those who may be encountering Ukrainian history and thought for the first time.
The project addresses decolonization in a cultural, historical, and epistemic sense, focusing on:
– questioning imperial and Soviet-era narratives
– highlighting marginalized Ukrainian voices
– rethinking ukrainian identity, memory, and cultural heritage
– situating Ukraine within broader European and global debates
Why this project matters
For a long time, Ukraine has been framed through external, often imperial perspectives. KARTA responds to this by amplifying self-representation, plurality, and intellectual independence. It creates a bridge between Ukrainian and German audiences, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of Europe’s cultural landscape.
What makes KARTA special
– Developed through Ukrainian-German collaboration
– Combines academic rigor with accessible language
– Designed for cultural institutions, educators, NGOs, and the general public
– Connected to a series of public events, discussions, and presentations in Germany and Ukraine
– Part of a broader effort to strengthen resilient cultural networks and long-term partnerships
