The call for paper for the 22nd Biennial International Conference on Baroque Music 2027 is online: For the first time the guest country for the conference will be Portugal. It will take place at the Royal Palace of Mafra - Seat of the Portuguese branch of the Centre Européen de Musique and not far away from the world famous surfing spot of Erceira at the Atlantic coast! Musicologists and scholar performers from all over the world will meet and discuss their newest research projects and discoveries. As usually in many papers recent studies on musical sources will be presented at this occasion, which means that will be very interested in following the forthcoming program!

The 22nd Biennial International Conference on Baroque Music is taking place from 21st to 25th July 2027 at the Royal Building of Mafra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Musicology and computer technology have long formed a fruitful partnership. At the MedRen conference 2026 in Warsaw, an example was recently presented that points to very promising possibilities for future projects: analyzing production data, such as place and year of printed anthologies in the RISM B/I series, along with the attributed names of composers, offers new insights into composer networks in the early modern period through a large-scale, data-driven study. Don't miss the Symposium on 20th Century Composer's Archives organized by the Archivo Manuel de Falla which will take place at the magnificent Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain, from october 22 to october 23!

Queda menos de un mes para el Symposium Internacional «Archivos de compositores del siglo XX»

Los próximos 22 y 23 de octubre, Granada acogerá este encuentro internacional que reunirá en el Palacio de Carlos V a especialistas, archivistas e investigadores de los principales centros de documentación musical de Europa.

Organizado por la Fundación Archivo Manuel de Falla, el simposio abordará las claves, retos y estrategias actuales en la gestión de los legados musicales del siglo XX. Contaremos con la participación de representantes de instituciones de referencia como el Bartók Archívum, la Paul Sacher Stiftung, el Archivo Storico Ricordi, la Biblioteca Nacional de España o la Fundación Juan March, entre muchas otras.

La entrada es libre y gratuita previa inscripción.

Again, I browsed around a bit on the internet to visit the site of a library that has already contributed to the RISM database. This time, I had a closer look at the "Biblioteca Digital"—the digital collections—of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Music lovers and researchers can do research in various categories, particularly the "Partituras" and "Vilancicos" (song texts). But we can also find music-related entries in the "Publicações Periódicas" (which contain, among others, music magazines, some of which include reproductions of sheet music), "Iconografia" and "Livros", where we find—for instance—Francisco de Sá Viana's "Rudimentos de Musica explicados segundo os principios adoptados pelo Conservatorio de Musica de Paris." Also, the category "Reservados | Impresos" features some interesting items, such as an edition of Augusto José de Carvalho's musical setting of the first stanzas of the Portuguese epic poem "Os Lusíadas". Have fun scrolling, searching, and discovering!

„Marie Antoinette fête ses 20 ans à Versailles“! Vor 20 Jahren kam

Sofia Coppolas erfolgreicher Film mit Kirsten Dunst in der Hauptrolle in die Kinos. Dieses Ereignis greift eine Ausstellung im Petit Trianon in Versailles auf, die bis zum 24.01.2027 laufen wird, und zeigt u.a. Filmrequisiten, Kostüme, Fotos vom Set und Kulissenelemente.
Auch in RISM finden sich Spuren aus dem Leben der bereits mit 38 Jahren hingerichteten französischen Königin: als Komponistin, Widmungsträgerin, Aufführende, Besitzerin von Musiknoten, im Titel von Kompositionen und als Opernstoff. This year we commememorate important anniversaries of two great German renaissance composers: The death of THOMAS STOLTZER and the birth of LUDWIG DASER both occured in the year of 1526, 500 years ago!
Thomas Stoltzer was born in Schweidnitz in Silesia, he later lived and worked in Breslau ( ), where he came into contact with Lutheran reformers. Stoltzer wrote the music for the wedding of King Louis II. Jagiellon of Hungary and Bohemia and Maria of Habsburg, the sister of emperor Charles V.; this led to his appointment as Royal Hungarian Chapel Master. His most important works are his 4 German psalms for 6 voices, early examples of compositions on biblical texts in Martin Luther's translation, written as a commission for the Queen. But things got extremly difficult for Hungary and its allies in these years: In 1526, the Hungarians lost finally to the advancing Ottoman army at Mohácz, leading to the young king's death in battle. Stoltzer might have died in an drowning accident during his flight from the advancing Turks shortly after this traumatic event.
Stoltzer's German psalms survive in a manuscript partbook collection with 60 motets from the middle of the 16th century, copied in Martin Luther's home town of , they were purchased in 1858 by the Royal Saxon Library in Dresden (the modern Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden). The Sicilian musicologist and harpsichordist Roberto Pagano, author of a double biography of the composers Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti, had assembled a precious private collection of music scores, theoretical writings and libretti from the 17th and 18th century in his home in Palermo, many of them important Unica. After he had passed away in 2015 his private library was dissolved by his heirs, but fortunatly a great part of the libretto collection could be purchased in 2025 by the library BCU Fribourg / KUB Freiburg (RISM Siglum: CH-Fcu) in Switzerland, where it is available to the public; all volumes have been digitzed. Really, I would have loved to be there: On September 17 and 18 of this year, high-ranking representatives of the four musicological “R-projects” held a workshop for students of the Franz-Liszt-Academy in Budapest, providing ample and in-depth insights into the projects RISM, RILM, RIdIM and RIPM. Is there a better better opportunity to learn more or less firsthand about the history and current work of these projects and also to learn more by taking part in a hands-on session?
