Philipp "the Good", Duke of Burgundy, was born 700 years ago, on 31 July 1396 in Dijon. Under his reign, Burgundy became an important European power, and a dangerous rival to its bigger neighbor France. He supported Henry V. of England during the 100 years war against Charles VII, whom he hated since the latter had murdered his father John the Fearless in 1419. At the height of his power, Philipp reigned over 2 big unconnected territories, 1. the traditional Bourgogne region in central France with some adjacent regions and 2. great parts of the territory of the modern Benelux states (the traditional regions of Flanders, Hennegau, Brabant, Holland and Luxemburg). Philipp's wedding with Isabella of Portugal, which took place in 1430 in Bruges, was one of the most pompous and refined court festivities of the 15th century. Music from Philipps court - which was generally seen as the most elegant, refined, modern and rich courts of the 15th century - can be found in a monumental manuscript from the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford, MS. Canon. Misc. 213, which contains 326 pieces in choirbook notation by composers like Guillaume Dufay, Gilles Binchois, Jacques Vide, Hugo and Arnold de Lanterns and Johannes Ciconia, many of whom were active at Philipps's Burgundian Court. You can find the manuscript on RISM: https://opac.rism.info/id/rismid/rism1001347202 , the digitized manuscript has been published by the Bodleian Library: https://digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/objects/a4120d22-b62f-4b57-861d-43c839c790a0/

This June, the ULB - Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Bonn gave us notice about a great rediscovery: A full manuscript copy score from the late 18th century of J. S. Bach's BWV 232, which had disappeared from an archival box years ago, has been resurfaced! The score belongs to the collection owned by the Silesian organist Christian Benjamin Klein (1754-1825), in possession of the library. Now this precious source has found its way back to its rightful owner. The library has immediatly provided a digital copy https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:hbz:5:1-451928, and the source has been directly cataloged by RISM: https://rism.online/sources/1001381886 . Finally the famous Klein Collection at Bonn University Library, the remainder of which has been already catalogued by RISM many years ago, can be studied again in its entirety!

Happy 275. Birthday, Nannerl Mozart! Unfortunatly we still haven't found any pieces composed by Wolfgang's elder sister Maria Anna. Hopefully there will be future rediscoveries by musicologists which can be added to our database! Here we suggest a brand new book with essays and papers on her life and work as a professional musician, the volume has been prepared and edited by our Salzburg RISM colleague Dr. Eva Neumayr, who is also president of the Maria-Anna-Mozart-Gesellschaft Salzburg

A wonderful discovery was made recently by our colleague Andrea Hartmann as part of a smaller cataloguing project at the German RISM Office in Dresden at the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden . Just in time for the 200 year commemoration of C. M. von Weber's death, a dedicatory copy from 1818 for Prince Frederick of Gotha of the E flat major Mass has been identified in the St. Augustine Church in Gotha (Thuringia). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQT1m2yqWbQ&list=PLC0324E2JQQZ5jOGDmSbD5BXUY8hDWX55

A wonderful discovery was made as part of a smaller cataloguing project at the German RISM Office in Dresden. Although the reorganization of RISM will bring the work of the RISM Office in Dresden to an end, the phase-out funding granted for the year 2026 will help ensure the preservation of research...

Happy 250th Birthday to Caroline of Baden, Wife of King Maximilian Joseph I., the first Bavarian King. When they married in 1797 in Karlsruhe, she was allowed to keep her protestant faith. In arch-catholic Bavaria, this was a revolutionary step toward religious tolerance. The Bavarian Court Chapel master Peter von Winter (1754-1825), even composed lutheran church cantatas and chorales for the services visited by the electress (since 1799) and later queen (since 1806). Two examples of German protestant church music by Winter are the hymn "O könnt' ich dich, mein Gott, so preisen" https://opac.rism.info/id/rismid/rism1001089186 for Solo voices, choir and wind instruments or the German Te Deum "Herr Gott dich loben wir" https://opac.rism.info/id/rismid/rism1001088655 , both from the Royal Court Music Collection in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

This year, we are commemorating the 150th anniversary of the death of José Antonio Gómes. He was born in 1805 and went on to become one of the most important figures in Mexican musical life—in many respects. John G. Lazos, a renowned expert on this subject, has written an insightful article on the life and work of this extraordinary composer, which we are publishing on our website.
