🤝 Connecting talent, innovation and markets across borders

Shortly after the celebration of 70 years of German-Tunisian diplomatic relations, German Minister of Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul met with Germany-based Tunisian entrepreneurs to discuss the future of economic cooperation between the two countries.

💡 Hosted at The Dot, Tunisia’s leading digital innovation hub, the exchange focused on the role of the Tunisian diaspora and young entrepreneurs in strengthening these ties. With their skills, international experience and networks, they build bridges between businesses, innovation ecosystems and markets in Tunisia and Germany. Moderated by GIZ Tunisie, the panel recognised diaspora as strategic actors in economic and development cooperation.

📢 Are you part of the Syrian and interested in vocational training and employment prospects in Syria?

On 7 September 2026, the Platform “A New Beginning for Syria” and the GIZ project “TVET and Employment in Syria (STEP)” are inviting , and from the Syrian diaspora to an online event on vocational training, labour market-oriented skills development and employment promotion in Syria.

➡️ The discussion will highlight the activities of the GIZ STEP project and explore how diaspora stakeholders can contribute specialist knowledge, business contacts, as well as digital matching tools. The goal is to facilitate networking between diapora actors with ongoing or planned activities in the fields of training, skills development, the placement of skilled workers in Syria as well as support the formation of collaborative diaspora initiatives and enterprises.

Tunisian Diaspora Month has come to a close, highlighting the many ways in which connections between Tunisia and its diaspora can create new opportunities across borders.

On this occasion, we are highlighting the Stuttgart-based diaspora organisation Verein der Tunesier in Stuttgart e. V.(VTS), which has partnered with the TAA - Tunisian Automotive Association) in to strengthen career opportunities for Tunisian women in the automotive sector.

🚗 As more women enter the automotive sector, the path to leadership remains challenging. Through their joint project, supported by GIZ, VTS and TAA are connecting young female professionals across Germany and Tunisia, using workshops, mentoring and knowledge exchange to strengthen their skills, networks and pathways into leadership.

🎬 The experiences of women already shaping Tunisia’s automotive sector show why creating these opportunities matters. The Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) will develop a new political concept on diaspora cooperation in the context of German development cooperation, and representatives are invited to help shape it from the very beginning.

🤝 Join the Diaspora Advisory Committee and contribute your perspectives to the drafting process over the next 12 months, including co-design workshops and a kick-off event in Berlin on 16 September.

🌍 Help shape the future of BMZ’s cooperation with diaspora communities!

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will develop a new political concept on diaspora cooperation in the context of German development cooperation. This initiative aligns with a broader reform agenda to make more locally led, inclusive, and responsive to diverse perspectives.

🤝 Join the Diaspora Advisory Committee

To ensure diaspora representatives are involved from the beginning; BMZ is inviting valued diaspora partners to apply to join a new Diaspora Advisory Committee. Over the next 12 months, members of the committee will directly shape the drafting process. This entails a kick-off event in Berlin on 16 September and several co-design workshops.

This week we are highlighting the Berlin-based diaspora organisation African Ally e.V., which has partnered with Freeworld International in to support women shea producers in the Akoma Cooperative Women Association in Pusu Namogo. Together, they are helping the women make their production more efficient, strengthen their skills and expand their economic opportunities.

🥜 From harvesting the shea fruits, to preparing the nuts for processing them into butter, the different phases of production remain labour-intensive and physically demanding for women. Through the joint project, supported by GIZ, the women shea producers received five new machines and training in machinery operation, cooperative management, financial literacy and leadership, enabling them to significantly reduce their workload and scale up production.

⏱️ The impact is striking: processing 75 kg of shea nuts now takes just five hours instead of five days.

How can Viet Nam’s coastal cities move from reacting to floods to anticipating them? 🌍💧

In Hải Phòng, diaspora expert Tran Hung Cuong from Stadtentwässerung Hannover is working with the Hai Phong Wastewater and Drainage Company (SADCO) to strengthen urban flood resilience through digital innovation. Using GIS technology, Tran Hung Cuong brings sustainable, high-tech solutions to support the city’s drainage management, benefiting nearly 2 million residents.

His assignment unfolds in two key phases:

📍 Phase 1 (July – August 2026):

🗺️ Establishing an open-source QGIS & SpatiaLite topological database

📚 Conducting Train-the-Trainer (ToT) workshops

A core team of technical engineers is mastering these tools to ensure long-term, independent capacity building.

📍 Phase 2 (December 2026): Developing an Operational Flood Protection Plan by combining historical flood records with spatial data to strengthen emergency preparedness and improve responses to extreme weather events. 🚨

By combining German technical knowledge with local expertise, this assignment shows how diaspora engagement drives digital transformation, strengthens local capacities, and supports climate adaptation where it matters most.

Empowering women through sustainable agriculture 🌱

'I didn't know that Ecuador produces some of the finest vanilla in the world.' This is a sentence that siblings and diaspora entrepreneurs Maria José and Daniel Chiriboga have heard more than once in Europe. With their diaspora-led social enterprise Ayan EC, they intend not only to help Ecuadorian vanilla gain the recognition it deserves but also promote labour equity for women in rural communities in their country of origin. 🌿

👩🏻‍🌾 Ayan Ec seeks to empower women by creating fair income opportunities, raising awareness, and promoting decent working conditions across the various stages of vanilla production.

💡 Thanks to the Business Ideas for Development (BID) Accelerator initiative, Maria José and Daniel were able to bring their social enterprise to the next level. Ayan Ec received training on branding, packaging, and impact definition, as well as the ability to navigate different export markets. This initiative was supported by GIZ's Programme 'Shaping development-oriented migration'.

Mujeres que cultivan futuro 🌱

"No sabía que producía una de las mejores vainillas del mundo." Esta es una frase que los hermanos y emprendedores de la diáspora María José y Daniel Chiriboga han escuchado más de una vez en Europa. Con su empresa social liderada por la diáspora, Ayan, no solo busca ayudar a que la vainilla ecuatoriana obtenga el reconocimiento que merece, sino que también promueve la equidad laboral para las mujeres en las comunidades rurales en su país de origen. 🌿

👩🏻‍🌾 Ayan Ec busca empoderar a las mujeres creando oportunidades de ingresos justos, generando conciencia y promoviendo condiciones de trabajo dignas en las distintas etapas de la producción de vainilla.

💡 Gracias a la iniciativa "Ideas de negocio para el desarrollo – Aceleración " (BID), María José y Daniel pudieron llevar su empresa social al siguiente nivel. Ayan Ec recibió capacitación en desarrollo de marca (branding), diseño de empaques y definición de impacto, además de herramientas para desenvolverse en distintos mercados de exportación.
