CULTURE GOES EUROPE (CGE) – Soziokulturelle Initiative Erfurt e.V. is a non-formal education organisation, active today in the fields of local, national and international youth work, socio-cultural activities, citizen participation and in political education through the realisation of different projects and programmes with local, national and international partners.

Yesterday we hosted the final Civics in VET workshop in Erfurt, and what a great way to close the project ✨
We came together with participants from different backgrounds to reflect, discuss, and exchange on the role of civic education in vocational schools. Through interactive activities, open conversations, and shared experiences, we explored why democratic competences matter, not only in education, but in everyday life.

A big thank you to everyone who joined, contributed, and made the space so open and engaging 💬

And special thanks to The Plurals for co-hosting this event with us!

This might be the end of the project, but definitely not the end of the conversation 💡

Gestern haben wir den abschließenden Civics in VET Workshop in Erfurt veranstaltet, ein großartiger Abschluss für das Projekt ✨

Gemeinsam mit Teilnehmenden aus verschiedenen Bereichen haben wir über die Rolle von politischer Bildung in der beruflichen Bildung reflektiert und diskutiert. Durch interaktive Methoden, offene Gespräche und Austausch konnten wir zeigen, warum demokratische Kompetenzen nicht nur in der Bildung, sondern auch im Alltag wichtig sind.

Ein großes Dankeschön an alle, die dabei waren und den Raum so lebendig gestaltet haben 💬

Last Friday, we held our networking and webinar event co-hosted with the DARE Network as part of their Network Lunch series.
Together with educators, youth workers, and civil society actors, we explored the question “Civic education in VET: How to do it and how to collaborate?”, but also why democratic competence should be seen not as an add-on, but as a core responsibility in vocational education.
We shared insights from our project “Civics in VET”, and KulturLife shared their insights of their project “CoCIVIC”.

Am vergangenen Freitag haben wir gemeinsam mit dem DARE-Netzwerk im Rahmen dessen Network Lunch-Reihe eine Networking- und Webinar-Veranstaltung durchgeführt.
Zusammen mit Pädagog*innen, Jugendarbeiter*innen und Akteur*innen der Zivilgesellschaft haben wir uns mit der Frage „Politische Bildung in der beruflichen Bildung: Wie geht das und wie kann man dabei zusammenarbeiten?“ beschäftigt, aber auch damit, warum demokratische Kompetenz nicht als Zusatz, sondern als Kernaufgabe der beruflichen Bildung angesehen werden sollte.
Wir haben Erkenntnisse aus unserem Projekt „Civics in VET“ vorgestellt, und KulturLife hat Einblicke in sein Projekt “CoCIVIC” gegeben.

Civic education is a shared pedagogical responsibility. Democratic competence develops through attitudes practiced across all subjects and throughout school life.
Our National Position Paper therefore calls for sustainable support structures for teachers, including regular training, supervision, appropriate materials, and recognised coordination time.
Only confident and supported teachers can offer students spaces for open, critical, and respectful dialogue in a polarised society.

Nur selbstbewusste und unterstützte Lehrkräfte können den Schülern in einer polarisierten Gesellschaft Raum für einen offenen, kritischen und respektvollen Dialog bieten.

Many teachers feel insufficiently prepared and unsupported when addressing civic education, particularly in polarised or conflictual classroom situations.
Our National Position Paper therefore calls for mandatory, interdisciplinary training for all vocational school teachers, ensuring that civic education is structurally supported rather than left to individual initiative.

Cooperation with civil society organisations is a key component of high-quality civic education. In vocational schools, however, such cooperation often depends on chance, short-term projects, or the additional efforts of individual teachers.
Our National Position Paper therefore calls for the long term and structural integration of political education providers into vocational education. Stable partnerships, binding framework agreements, and dedicated budgets and time resources enable professional coordination and reduce the burden on teachers.
Civil society actors contribute valuable expertise, diverse methods, and additional perspectives that enrich civic education.

Our National Position Paper highlights the need for methodological innovation in civic education in vocational school. Interactive formats such as simulations, role plays, debates, and encounters with decision-makers enable students to actively experience democratic processes and develop a sense-efficacy.
Vocational schools should be places of active democracy, where participation is not merely formal but lived in everyday school life.

Political education becomes meaningful when it connects to young people’s everyday lives.
Our National Position Paper calls for curricula in vocational schools to consistently link political topics with students’ lived realities (at school, at work, and in society).
This includes not only knowledge about labour law, rights and duties in training, or workplace safety, but also social and interpersonal competences such as nonviolent communication, solidarity, and dealing with diversity. Democracy must be taught as a living principle, something that is practiced in daily interactions, not only discussed in theory.
Such an approach strengthens democratic resilience and helps young people develop values that enable them to resist polarisation and extremist simplifications.

Politische Bildung wird dann sinnvoll, wenn sie einen Bezug zum Alltag junger Menschen herstellt.
Unser nationales Positionspapier fordert, dass die Lehrpläne an Berufsschulen politische Themen konsequent mit der Lebenswirklichkeit der Schüler*innen (in der Schule, am Arbeitsplatz und in der Gesellschaft) verknüpfen.
Dazu gehören nicht nur Kenntnisse über Arbeitsrecht, Rechte und Pflichten in der Ausbildung oder Sicherheit am Arbeitsplatz, sondern auch soziale und zwischenmenschliche Kompetenzen wie gewaltfreie Kommunikation, Solidarität und der Umgang mit Vielfalt. Demokratie muss als lebendiges Prinzip vermittelt werden, das im täglichen Miteinander gelebt und nicht nur theoretisch diskutiert wird.
Ein solcher Ansatz stärkt die demokratische Resilienz und hilft jungen Menschen, Werte zu entwickeln, die sie in die Lage versetzen, sich gegen Polarisierung und extremistische Vereinfachungen zu wehren.

Political education in vocational schools must not be treated as an optional add-on. Our National Position Paper calls for a paradigm shift: political education should be recognised as a core democratic responsibility of vocational education in Thuringia.
This includes strengthening the political dimension of existing subjects, ensuring binding minimum hours for political education, and preventing its reduction in favour of purely economic content. Reducing vocational education to labour-market preparation alone overlooks the broader mission of vocational schools: to educate responsible, critically thinking, and democratically engaged citizens.

Politische Bildung in Berufsschulen darf nicht als optionales Zusatzangebot behandelt werden. Unser Positionspapier fordert einen Paradigmenwechsel: Politische Bildung sollte als zentrale demokratische Aufgabe der beruflichen Bildung in Thüringen anerkannt werden.
Dazu gehört, die politische Dimension bestehender Fächer zu stärken, verbindliche Mindeststunden für politische Bildung sicherzustellen und deren Reduzierung zugunsten rein wirtschaftlicher Inhalte zu verhindern. Die Reduzierung der beruflichen Bildung auf die Vorbereitung auf den Arbeitsmarkt allein verkennt die umfassendere Aufgabe der Berufsschulen: die Ausbildung verantwortungsbewusster, kritisch denkender und demokratisch engagierter Bürger.
