About d. fleiss & east–west artists
The artist group d. fleiss & east–west artists was founded in January 1998 by Dorothea Fleiss together with several international artists. The group’s mission is to establish a strong foundation for artistic cooperation between Eastern and Western countries.

Its aim is to foster cultural dialogue and artistic exchange between outstanding artists shaped by different historical and cultural backgrounds. Through symposia held in both East and West, DFEWA has created a global network that encourages deeper understanding of contemporary art practices worldwide.

Artists from many countries have participated over the years, contributing to a vibrant and diverse artistic community.

The symposium offers artists the opportunity to work together, exchange ideas, and develop new artistic approaches in an inspiring Alpine environment.

Biennale Visit – Venice 2026
As part of the programme, participants will also visit the Venice Biennale, providing an important opportunity to experience current international artistic trends and deepen the dialogue on contemporary art.

Final Exhibition
At the end of the symposium, all artworks created during the residency will be presented in a public exhibition with an official opening at Burg Groppenstein.

Mallnitz has become a long‑standing home for DFEWA’s international symposia. Surrounded by mountains and silence, the location offers ideal conditions for concentrated artistic work and intercultural exchange.
The 19th edition continues DFEWA’s mission: to connect artists across borders and strengthen the understanding of contemporary art worldwide.

DFEWA Sommerakademie 2026 – Carei, Rumänien
Die DFEWA Sommerakademie 2026 findet in Carei, Rumänien, statt und wird von den Dozentinnen
Kamila Bednarska, PhD (Universität Rzeszów, Polen)
und Dorothea Fleiss, PhD (DFEWA e.V., Deutschland)
geleitet.

Das Projekt entsteht in Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Rzeszów und dem Studentenverband Polen.
Ziel der Akademie ist es, Studierende und junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus mehreren Ländern zusammenzubringen, um gemeinsam an interdisziplinären Kunstprojekten zu arbeiten und den kulturellen Austausch zwischen Ost und West zu stärken.

Die Teilnehmenden entwickeln während der Sommerakademie Werke in den Bereichen zeitgenössische Malerei, Künstlerbuch, Installation, Performance und experimentelle Kunstpraxis.

Abschlussausstellung
Die Ergebnisse der Sommerakademie werden im Rahmen der
Buchkunstbiennale EIBAB
im Kunstmuseum Sathmar präsentiert.

Diese Ausstellung bietet den Studierenden eine internationale Plattform, um ihre Arbeiten einem breiten Publikum aus Kunstfachleuten, Kuratorinnen, Künstlern und Kulturinstitutionen zu zeigen.


DFEWA Summer Academy 2026 – Carei, Romania
The DFEWA Summer Academy 2026 takes place in Carei, Romania, led by Kamila Bednarska PhD (University of Rzeszów, Poland) and Dorothea Fleiss PhD (DFEWA e.V., Germany).
In collaboration with the University of Rzeszów and the Polish Student Association, students work on interdisciplinary art projects fostering East–West cultural dialogue.

The final works will be presented at the
EIBAB Book Art Biennale
in the Sathmar Art Museum.

A Space for Voices, Memory, and Resistance
The Space of Freedom is an international Biennale dedicated to the book as a living organism — a keeper of memory, a vessel of resistance, a quiet yet unbreakable force.

Presented at the Muzeul de Artă Satu Mare in collaboration with the Muzeul Județean Satu Mare, the Biennale explores the book as a political, poetic, and cultural medium. The participating artists investigate how books preserve endangered voices, challenge silence, and bear witness to shifting narratives across Europe and beyond.

The exhibition welcomes all forms of contemporary book art: artist books, book objects, sculptural and conceptual works, installations, text‑based pieces, paper art, printmaking, and hybrid or experimental formats.

Curatorial Focus
The Biennale brings together works that explore:

The book as a guardian of endangered voices

Silence as a political, cultural, or personal condition

The fragility of paper versus the strength of ideas

The book as witness, protest, refuge, or rebellion

Europe’s shifting narratives and their echoes

The poetic tension between what is spoken and what is suppressed

From 12–16 June 2026, artists from Mexico, Tunisia, Serbia, Turkey, Egypt, Germany, Kosovo, Jordan, Albania, Iceland, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Ireland, and North Macedonia gather in Ulcinj, Montenegro for the international art symposium Dulcigno Inspiration.
