(EASD) is a membership-based academic non-profit organization. It was founded in 1965 and its headquarters is based in Duesseldorf, Germany. EASD is a networks for diabetologists with active members from all over the world. Membership is open to scientists, physicians, students, postdocs and fellows, allied health professionals and nurses who are interested in the field of diabetes or related dise

ases. The EASD Annual Meeting is one of the largest diabetes conferences in the world, attracting thousands of delegates each year. The scientific programme includes hundreds of talks, presentations and discussions on the latest results from basic and clinical diabetes research. EASD is also a leading player in postgraduate education having trained thousands of healthcare professionals through dedicated training courses and online education activities. Our award winning e-Learning platform, offers free access to courses developed with world-class experts in diabetes research and care. The Association is actively involved in producing and endorsing statements and guidelines translating the latest results from diabetes research into best practices in diabetes management. These statements and guidelines have proven to have significant visibility and substantial impact on health care, particularly when concerning statements on treatment and diagnostic criteria. By creating the Early Career Academy, EASD has increased its commitment to support, train, mentor, and create opportunities for scientists, clinicians, and students who are at an early or intermediate stage of their career. The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) was founded by EASD in 2000 to stimulate diabetes research in Europe. EFSD offers support in all areas of diabetes research through a wide range of joint and stand-alone initiatives. Funding streams are available throughout the year and since inception, EFSD has committed over €120 million to diabetes research in Europe. EASD is also the publisher of Diabetologia, a major monthly international diabetes journal with an impact factor of 8.2 (2022). The journal publishes original clinical, translational and experimental research on all aspects of diabetes and related subjects. For more information about EASD, please visit: www.easd.org

🎙️How should continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) be used in people living with type 2 diabetes?

Dame Melanie J Davies DBE and Prof. Amanda Adler discuss the development of a new EASD clinical guideline on CGM in T2D - one of the first guidelines produced under EASD’s new evidence-based guideline programme. The conversation explores why CGM emerged as a priority topic, the importance of patient involvement and the challenges of balancing clinical evidence with real-world implementation.

This new guideline will be presented for the first time at this year's Annual Meeting in Milan: 📅 Wednesday, 30 September 2026 | 🕛 16:30 - 17:30 | 📍 London Hall.

🧠 Meet Dr. Ben A. Kappel (Uniklinik RWTH Aachen), grant recipient of the and Sanofi European Diabetes Research Programme in Diabetes associated with Cardiovascular Disease. 👏

In his research project “Network analysis of interactome dysregulation in the pathogenesis of HFpEF in type 2 diabetes”, Dr. Kappel uses paired coronary sinus and arterial sampling combined with integrated proteomics and metabolomics analyses to investigate how type 2 diabetes alters cardiac metabolism and contributes to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

The study uncovered convergent signatures of mitochondrial dysfunction, altered substrate handling, and inflammatory lipid signalling, providing new mechanistic insight into HFpEF.

🗣️ “The grant was instrumental in enabling this translational multi-omics project and establishing a unique clinical dataset in HFpEF. It significantly supported my development as an independent investigator and strengthened international collaborations in cardiometabolic research,” Dr. Kappel shares.

🪙50 years of attending EASD Annual Meetings: in this special episode, Prof. Eberhard Standl (Helmholtz Munich) reflects on attending his first EASD meeting in 1975, presenting research on diabetic ketoacidosis, and witnessing extraordinary advances in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes over five decades.

From the importance of lifestyle and exercise to the potential reversal of type 2 diabetes, immunotherapies for type 1 diabetes, and emerging links between diabetes and cancer, Prof. Standl shares a unique perspective on where the field has been and where it is heading next.

A fascinating conversation about scientific curiosity, lifelong learning, and the enduring goal of normalising glucose and improving lives.
