Irish word of the week with our Irish speaker ! 🇮🇪

This week's words are "music and craic": ceol agus craic ("kee-oh-l aw-guss crack")

There's no direct translation for 'craic' but it essentially means fun or merriment.

This week our board had the pleasure of joining a memorable evening at the Staatskanzlei des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, held on the occasion of Ireland's EU Council Presidency — its eighth term, running from July through the end of 2026. 🇮🇪🇩🇪🇪🇺

The evening opened with traditional Irish music (Robert York on guitar and Alex Froitzheim on Uilleann pipes) before State Secretary Christian Wiermer welcomed Ambassador Maeve Collins to discuss the Presidency's priorities.

Held under the motto "Together we are stronger," these centre on:

- Competitiveness
- Shared values
- Security

Both speakers agreed that Europe can only meet today's challenges by standing united.

It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces among the guests — a reminder of just how close German-Irish ties are here in Düsseldorf.

Irish Milestones at Volksgarten parkrun! ☘️🏃‍♀️

The 297th Volksgarten parkrun (15th August 2026) wasn't just a warm 5k along the Düssel—it was a major milestone morning for the Parkrunning Paddies!

While taking on two laps of the sunny park alongside 127 other runners, three members of the group hit some serious personal achievements together:

☘️Aoibhinn Gallagher crossed the finish line of her 25th parkrun.

☘️Deirdre Keane earned her 50th parkrun milestone.

☘️Brenda James also reached the big 50 parkruns mark!

A massive congratulations to Aoibhinn, Deirdre, Brenda, and all the Parkrunning Paddies who took part from everyone at the German-Irish Club Düsseldorf—thank you for bringing so much Irish spirit to Volksgarten! 👏🎉
