EU Presidency & Irish Community in NRW 🇪🇺

What a night! Loved the top-tier chats from the panel & audience last night. We had the best time talking EU Presidency, soft diplomacy & our thriving GAA community here in NRW.

A massive shoutout to our fantastic panel, brilliantly moderated by Mark Ennis (IBN):

• 🇪🇺 James Kilcourse (Deputy Head of Mission, Irish Embassy Berlin) gave us the inside scoop on Ireland’s upcoming 8th EU Presidency

• 💼 Jayne Mulcahy (IBN Düsseldorf) & Laura Klöppinger () shared inspiring takeaways from the Global Irish Civic Forum in Dublin.

• 🏆 Sinead (GAA Düsseldorf) shared insights on our thriving GAA community in NRW, keeping everyone connected through sport and social life.

• 🌍 Paul Cunningham (long-term resident) dived into our local community—how we network, how Germans perceive Ireland, and why our bonds are stronger than ever.

Turns out, people from the Rhineland and Irish people are a perfect match—we both love open conversations, easy small talk, and a good story.

🍻 Last but definitely not least, a massive THANK YOU to McLaughlin’s! The best real Irish pub in Düsseldorf, run by two absolute legends, for hosting us and making us feel right at home.

📊 Shape the future of our community! The IBN is currently running a survey to help build a stronger network for Irish folks in NRW & Düsseldorf. Please take a few moments to support them and fill it out here:

This month, we welcomed Dr Torsten Caeners from the University of Duisburg-Essen for an unforgettable poetry evening at McLaughlin's Pub, Düsseldorf. He walked us through Seamus Heaney's biography and the historical and political context that shaped his work, before taking a closer look at some of his best-known poems like Bogland and Digging.

A lively Q&A and great conversations followed, and we're glad Dr Caeners stayed for a few pints!

Evenings like this are what our club is all about: Irish culture, good company, and new connections.

You're always welcome back Dr Caeners!

A special thank you as well to for being our regular Stammtisch home, for having us for the evening, and for taking care of our guests.
