After more than 3 years of war, the health system in is under severe strain.💔

“Years of fighting, mass displacement and repeated attacks on health facilities have pushed Sudan’s health system to the brink of collapse. At the same time, outbreaks of cholera, malaria, dengue and measles are spreading,” says Edo Lihic, Head of Operations for Malteser International’s Sudan emergency response.

To help respond to this crisis, an eight-member Malteser International emergency response team is currently in Port Sudan, training local nurses, doctors and specialists in life-saving skills, with a focus on emergency care and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. 🏥 The team is supported by an infection prevention expert from the Robert Koch Institute. 🤝

The mission is carried out in close coordination with the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), building on a previous training mission in December last year.

A big thank you to Aktion Deutschland Hilft for making this work possible. 🙏

What does it take to support 2,500 women and girls with safe menstrual hygiene?

About 5,000 pads and one workroom full of determination. 💪

In Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement in Uganda, Emelida Yawa and the Ocea Tailoring Group turn fabric into reusable pads for women and girls across the settlement. Malteser International trained 60 tailors from refugee and host communities to make reusable sanitary pads, creating livelihoods while responding to a real health and education need. After years of training and repeated production runs, the Ocea Tailoring Group has become a skilled, reliable, and ready-to-go resource.
Across three production cycles, the trained tailors produced 20,000 reusable pads, supporting women and girls in the refugee settlement. 🙌

This project is supported by Auswärtiges Amt and is part of a broader effort to reduce period poverty in Uganda.

Meet 15-year-old Swarnali, who lives in a village in Dowarabazar Upazila in northern Bangladesh. She comes from a family with irregular income, where access to basic hygiene products is not guaranteed. Swarnali struggled to manage menstrual hygiene and used cloth due to lack of access to sanitary materials, which often made her feel uncomfortable, especially at school. Moreover, without proper hygiene, it can increase the risk of infections.

That is why 600 adolescent girls received dignity kits with essential menstrual hygiene items. Today, Swarnali can manage her period with greater comfort and confidence, including at school.

“Now I feel more comfortable and less worried when I’m at school,” says Swarnali.

More than three years into the war, the humanitarian crisis in remains catastrophic. More 30 million people depend on humanitarian aid, while large parts of the healthcare system have collapsed and many medical professionals have been killed or forced to flee.

From June 1–4, an eight-member Malteser International emergency response team, supported by an infection prevention expert from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), will deploy to Port Sudan. Together, they will train nurses, doctors, and water and sanitation specialists in life-saving procedures.

“The situation in healthcare facilities is alarming. With a shortage of qualified staff, many hospital wards rely on undertrained personnel. Our focus is to ensure life-saving care can continue under these conditions,” says Edo Lihic, Head of Operations for our Sudan emergency response.

The mission is carried out in close coordination with the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). We have already conducted a similar training mission in Port Sudan in December last year. The mission is funded by Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

Ebola update: Here’s what the situation looks like ℹ️

The Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda continues to evolve. According to WHO, as of 24 May, more than 900 suspected Ebola cases and more than 220 suspected deaths have been reported. In Uganda, there are eight confirmed cases and 2 confirmed deaths.

Our team in DR Congo is responding with urgency and care, drawing on years of experience in tackling Ebola and other infectious diseases.

💬 We work closely with communities to raise awareness. Using the People First Impact Method (P-FIM), we listen to communities to better understand their living conditions, build trust, and encourage adherence to prevention measures. Other efforts include radio programs, door-to-door sensitization, and the distribution of information materials.

🏥 At the same time, we are strengthening health facilities with protective equipment, testing materials, isolation and treatment units, surveillance, contingency planning, and improved water, sanitation, and hygiene measures.

Donations are urgently needed. Your support counts: https://malt-int.org/48xo 🙏

These measures are possible thanks to the support of European Commission and Auswärtiges Amt.

Together for a ! Happy Menstrual Hygiene Day! 🩸🌍

Menstruation is a part of life for 2.1 billion adolescent girls and women worldwide.

⚠️ Yet more than 500 million lack the resources, facilities, and support they need to manage their periods safely and with dignity. More than 170 million do not have access to a toilet. And 378 million women and girls in low- and middle-income countries rely on old cloths, tissue paper, or other unhygienic materials during their periods. Stigma around menstruation remains widespread.

💪 But change is possible. By breaking the stigma and improving access to period products, safe water, sanitation, and period-friendly toilets, we can help ensure that no one is put at risk or held back because they menstruate. In our projects and in crisis settings, this is exactly what we are working towards.

Imagine working for years without a real break – under the constant threat of attacks, with little sleep, and while carrying your own experiences of loss and displacement. For many mental health professionals in , this is daily reality. Still, they work tirelessly to support others. 🫂

“The quality of care depends on the wellbeing of those providing it,” says Dmytro Nersisian, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Manager at Malteser International in Ukraine.

That’s why we strengthen not only mental health services, but also the people behind them. Together with our local partner organizations, we support professionals through supervision, burnout prevention, manageable workloads, and peer exchange.

Supporting mental health professionals is not optional – it is essential.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Freedom can look different in every place. A safe birth. Access to healthcare. A community that is able to recover and rebuild. Across our work, we encounter it in many forms, from small steps forward to long journeys toward stability and dignity. 🌍

Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit is present wherever life is protected, empowered and sustained.

Wishing all our friends and followers a blessed and hope-filled Pentecost. 🕊️
