Wi.e.dersprechen - Speak up

About the Project - Peace Work on a grassroots level
In 1994, while the wars in the former Yugoslavia were still waging, the Committee for Fundamental Rights and Democracy invited Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian internally displaced children to spend two weeks of vacation at the seaside together. Since 2004, young people from the three countries have been meeting every year for joint peace camps and workshops. To date, over 22,000 participants have used the opportunity to meet, discuss past and present conflicts and exchange ideas. In 2014, this work resulted in the foundation of the “Youth United in Peace” network, which works across borders. In 2002, at the height of the second Intifada, we invited young adults from Israel and Palestine for the first time. Since then, more than 2,300 participants have met in Germany. In intensive Dialogue Seminars, they deal with and dicuss their own affectedness by the conflict, the collective histories, and, perspectives of change towards peace in their societies. In 2023, the project changed its name to "Speak up - Dialogues across Borders", taking account of the projects development over time – today, it enables dialogue between young people from war and crisis areas and shows an exemplarily way of practical peace work. During the seminars and encounters, the participants develop an awareness of prejudices, power asymmetries and privileges and are encouraged to also critically question their own society.

𝐉𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭 for our lecture series and discussion: Dialogue in war - activists from Israel and Palestine report. Guests are the Palestinian and Israeli coordinators of the project “Wi.e.dersprechen - Dialogues across borders”.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is a long-running conflict that is often perceived as deadlocked. It has dominated news and political debates around the world since October 7, 2023 at the latest. Since 2002, the project “Wi.e.dersprechen - Dialogues across Borders” (formerly known as “Holidays from War”) has been facilitating two-week, intensive political dialog seminars for young Israelis and Palestinians in Germany with local partners.

Especially in the current situation, dialog seems a long way off - but the project's partners continue to work even in times of war. What motivates the activists? What does dialog work look like during war? What can it achieve? And why is it worth shaping and promoting dialog at grassroots level in particular?

👉 On their lecture tour in Germany, the Palestinian and Israeli coordinators of the project will report on their experiences with dialog, the challenges of their political work on the ground and their perspectives for a just Israeli-Palestinian peace.

🗣️The event will be held in English, with translation into German if required. More information and registration - link in bio!
