Bees have lived in tree cavities for over 30 million years. These natural habitats offer unique physical properties – such as hydrodynamic insulation that remains stable in both summer and winter without losing effectiveness. The shape of these cavities, often formed by tree fungi, supports energy-saving behaviors. As a result, bees consume only around 5 kg of honey to survive the winter – just 20% of what they need in conventional box hives. In other words: in boxes, they have to work five times harder to survive. That’s far from species-appropriate.
That’s why we developed HIIVE – a hive that replicates the insulation performance of a 200–300-year-old tree. Combined with natural geometry, wild comb, and species-appropriate dimensions, HIIVE creates a bee-friendly home while still allowing fair harvests for beekeepers – designed for non-commercial, nature-focused beekeeping.
HIIVE ofc ause also supports standard Varroa treatments and AFB inspections. And over the years, we’ve consistently observed colonies in HIIVE with very low Varroa levels that require minimal treatment…
