Part 3 of our eel mafia series: How Europol is fighting the illegal glass eel trade.

Up to 350 million glass eels are illegally smuggled from the EU to Asia every year. The criminals disguise the animals as other fish products or hide them in suitcases.

What is the EU doing about it? Operation LAKE has been bringing together customs and police authorities from 32 countries since 2015. The successes:

• Over 750 arrests
• 26 tonnes of glass eels saved
• 50% less illegal trade since 2016

But the problem remains: as long as there is legal fishing in the EU, it is difficult for the authorities to identify illegal eels.

👉 Our demand: a complete ban on eel fishing in the EU. A species threatened with extinction must not be fished, traded and consumed!

🧳Part 2 of our eel mafia series shows why the hunt for glass eels is so lucrative:

Although the EU banned the trade in 2010, the illegal export of glass eels to Asia is flourishing. The juveniles are caught in Europe and disguised as other fish products or smuggled in suitcases. The trade is extremely profitable: a kilo of glass eels can fetch up to 6,000 euros. The illegal market is estimated to be worth 3 billion euros per year.

📅Today we start our new three-part series on the eel, with a new part appearing every Wednesday for the next two weeks.

Stay tuned: in the next part you will find out what suitcases have to do with the ‘eel mafia’.
