Webinar „Faith in the new Plastics Treaty?“

The world is on the path to adopting a comprehensive plastic waste treaty, following the unanimous decision made by environment ministers across the globe last year. The working group responsible for implementing these plans will convene for the second time in Paris from 29 May to 2 June 2023.

Now is an opportune moment to assess the progress of the UN Plastics Treaty: Can it effectively address the widespread pollution problem affecting our planet? And how are Christian organizations contributing to the process?

Join us for an engaging 60-minute session featuring expert insights and a Q&A on Tuesday, 16 May 2023, at 6pm CET/Berlin time.

Speakers:
Lucy Tanner, Senior Associate Plastics & Waste, Tearfund
Ben Niblett, Coordinator, Renew Our World campaign

UN target: 30 percent of the world's oceans to become protected areas

After long and tough negotiations, the United Nations have agreed on a text to protect the world's oceans. The head of the UN conference that brought about the agreement, Rena Lee, said at the United Nations headquarters in New York to applause from delegates: "The ship has reached the shore."

The treaty has yet to be formally adopted, and the exact text has not yet been made public. What is already known, however, is that the agreement will allow for the establishment of marine protected areas in international waters. It will also require states to assess their economic projects, expeditions and other activities in the world's oceans for their environmental impact. Reactions to the UN agreement were very positive worldwide.

The WEA Sustainability Center welcomes the agreement and emphasizes in particular the importance of the plans to place biodiversity on the high seas under internationally binding protection. "The outcome of the Intergovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction is a historic step forward for the conservation of God's precious creation in the approximately 60 percent of the world's oceans designated as the high seas," said WEASC Director Matthias Boehning.

Dear friends and colleagues,

nearly 100 participants from 39 countries attended last week’s global virtual forum “Looking Ahead: Creation Care 2023”.

The recording and the slides (English, French & Spanish) are now available online on the World Evangelical Alliance Sustainability Center’s website at https://wea-sc.org/en/virtual-forum-looking-ahead-creation-care-2023-recording-and-all-resources. On the same page, you will also find a beautiful shareable compilation of the responses of participants of the pre-event survey to the question: “Many people feel a bit low about the progress on Creation Care. What is one thing that gives you hope?”.

We are working hard on putting all mentioned resources, webpages and other information up on the same page in the next step. Please revisit the page at a later time to find them.

Please subscribe to the WEASC mailing list to receive a notification e-mail once all material is uploaded as well as to receive further updates on Creation Care events, campaigns, activities and prayer points.  https://wea-sc.org/en/get-involved/mailing-list

Thanks and Blessings from the WEA Sustainability Center
Matthias

WEA Sustainability Center congratulates Elizabeth Maruma Mrema

The World Evangelical Alliance applauds yesterday's decision by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to appoint Ms. Elizabeth Maruma Mrema of Tanzania as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director for UNEP. The Secretary General of the World Evangelical Alliance, Archbishop Professor Dr Thomas Paul Schirrmacher (Bonn), the Director of Global Advocacy for the World Evangelical Alliance, Dr Janet E. Buckingham (Ottawa) and the Co-Directors of the WEA Sustainability Center, Dr Chris Elisara (San Diego) and Matthias K. Boehning (Bonn) heartily congratulate Elizabeth Mrema and wish her God's blessing for her new task and responsibility.

Just recently, Dr Chris Elisara met Elizabeth Mrema in Montreal (see picture) on the sidelines of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP15 in her role as Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). She has held this role since 2020 and has with her committed and courageous leadership personally contributed a lot to the adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at COP15 at the end of this year.

We look forward to continued collaboration and wish to express the World Evangelical Alliance's full support for the important work of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Of particular note is UNEP's innovative Faith for Earth Initiative, which we, as one of the world's major faith groups, do our utmost to support and help shape.
