World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD)

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) WMBD is a global initiative devoted to celebrating migratory birds and for promoting their conservation worldwide.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is a global awareness-raising campaign with the aim to highlight the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats. It was initiated in 2006 by the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) Secretariat in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). On the second Saturday each May and Oc

tober, people around the world come together in order to take action and organise public events such as bird festivals, education programmes and birdwatching excursions to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day. World Migratory Bird Day is excited to reveal the artwork for this year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” 🎨🐦

Created by artist Luísa Lacerda from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the hand-embroidered work brings the 2026 theme to life and highlights how community science and everyday observations contribute to protecting migratory birds across the globe.

The 2026 campaign artwork features migratory species, including the Cinnamon Teal, Merlin, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Barn Swallow, Oystercatcher, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, and Abdim’s Stork.

Each demonstrates how community science efforts, such as migration counts, nesting surveys, band sightings, and habitat monitoring, support conservation across regions and cultures.

On 9 May 2026, join us in celebrating art, science, and our shared responsibility to protect migratory birds. 🗓️🦆

World Cities Day, being celebrated today, raises global awareness of urbanization trends and challenges while promoting collective efforts towards sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban development.

This goal beautifully connects with the theme of World Migratory Bird Day 2025: “Shared Spaces – Creating Bird-friendly Cities and Communities.”

As urban areas expand, they increasingly become shared habitats for both humans and migratory birds. World Migratory Bird Day 2025 emphasizes the importance of healthy coexistence, highlighting how bird-friendly urban planning and community actions—such as planting native vegetation, creating green and blue spaces, and reducing hazards—can make cities safer and more welcoming for people and migratory birds.

Together, these global observances remind us that sustainable cities are not only built for people, but also for the countless species that share our urban spaces.

Domestic cats and non-native plants may seem harmless, but both can put serious pressure on bird populations.

One of the most surprising threats to birds comes from a familiar source—our beloved cats. 🐱 While they make great companions, domestic cats are also efficient predators that pose a significant threat to bird populations. In fact, each year, free-roaming cats kill billions of birds in North America alone.

Join us and take action! Keep your cats indoors or create safe outdoor spaces like screened-in porches or catios to give your feline friends fresh air without harming wildlife.

By making simple, mindful choices, we can all play a role in conserving migratory birds and restoring balance to our ecosystems.

Did you know birds are very important in maintaining biodiversity?

This , we’re calling for real action!

Urban development is changing the landscape for migratory birds, pushing them out of the spaces they once thrived in. But there’s a better way forward.

🏘️ From planting native gardens to integrating green and blue spaces in city planning, every effort counts.

Let’s transform our communities and cities into safer, bird-friendly places where nature and people can coexist.
