Cultivating Food Systems Transformation in Morocco
True transformation in our food systems doesn't happen overnight. It is cultivated through unwavering dedication, deep knowledge, and a shared vision.

Since October 2025, a remarkable cohort of 26 changemakers has been immersed in an intensive 9-month journey through the Agroecology and Organic Leadership Course Morocco.

In collaboration with DIAF Maroc, the German-Moroccan Technical Dialogue on Agriculture and Forestry, under the coordination of Mme Fatima Zahra ElMiri of the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, and Dr. Martin Baumgart from GOPA-AFC as leader of the Component Organic Agriculture, the IFOAM - Organics International Academy has spent months empowering these passionate leaders to build more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems. It has also been an incredible privilege to collaborate closely with Academy co-trainer Jouhaina Riahi

As we approach our final milestone this June 2026, these leaders stand ready to deploy their development plans and drive real, measurable change on the ground.

A historic milestone for the global organic movement! 🇳🇿
We warmly celebrate the appointment of Mike Butterick MP as New Zealand's new Associate Minister of Agriculture - Organics. Establishing a dedicated ministerial portfolio for the organic sector at the national government level is a landmark development and a powerful signal of long-term political commitment to sustainable farming.

"At a time when the world urgently needs resilient and sustainable food systems, this appointment sends a powerful signal that organic agriculture deserves dedicated political leadership." Karen Mapusua, President, IFOAM – Organics International.

What are the core challenges facing African smallholder farmers in animal husbandry? 🐄

This is the critical question that our member and ambassador Sylvia Kuria addressed during her keynote presentation at the IFOAM Animal Husbandry Alliance (IAHA) Conference in Frick last month.

Reflecting on the event, Sylvia notes a systemic issue that the global movement must confront:

“A notable gap observed at the conference was the limited representation of actors from the African continent in the organic animal husbandry space. This underrepresentation is not incidental; it reflects a system challenge,” writes Sylvia.

To bridge this gap, she calls for deliberate, collective action focused on two strategic areas:
1️⃣ Developing context-appropriate standards that reflect local realities.
2️⃣ Creating a targeted training curriculum to empower grassroots farmer leaders.

In our latest blog, Sylvia shares a comprehensive recap of her journey, from her key
technical takeaways and personal reflections to her concrete action plans upon returning to Kenya.

What comes to mind when you think about tea?

For many of us, it’s a centuries-old cultural tradition, a comforting herbal remedy when we’re under the weather, or even the vehicle of metaphors in our languages.

But how well do we actually know the leaf in our cup, and the people who grew it?

This International Tea Day, let’s look a little closer at the journey from field to cup.

🫖 Take our quick quiz below to see how much you know about the world of tea! 👇
