Why do we need an International Day for Women and Girls of African Descent? ✨
Because globally, they face some of the steepest hurdles due to a deeply rooted mix of racial, gender, and economic discrimination.

What does this look like in the world of farming? While women make up the backbone of agriculture across Africa, they are all too often handed the hardest conditions. They frequently work long hours with little to no pay, while lacking basic access to markets, tools, and equal opportunities.

On this International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent in the International Year of the Woman Farmer, it is even more important to rewrite the narrative and show the world what is possible when women are truly empowered.

Farmers and farmworkers are carrying the heaviest burden of our changing climate.

With El Niño driving severe drought risks across multiple continents, it is clear how fragile our global food supply is. We can no longer treat extreme weather as exceptions.

What we need now is real actions that protect our food from the ground up.

Investing in organic farming and agroecology, growing a wider variety of crops, and supporting local markets isn't just an ecological choice; it is the most financially sound move we can make we have.

Now is the time to back the solutions we know work.

Following our inaugural conversation with Grace Mbaru in Kiambu, Kenya, our long-time member and ambassador, Sylvia Kuria, travelled to West Africa to meet Christiana and see her inspiring work.

“Christiana’s story gives me a much-needed reminder of where we all started as organic farmers and entrepreneurs,” Sylvia shared. “It’s also a powerful moment to remember that while we are all working toward the same goals, we are building this global movement together, each at our own pace.”
