At Fairtrade, we say no to child labour.

We know it’s still a huge problem affecting almost 138 million children globally according to the International Labour Organization.

Not only do we prohibit child labour in our Fairtrade Standards, we continue to fight the root causes. This means addressing poverty, progressing towards living incomes, and strengthening farmer cooperatives to prevent and remediate child labour.

No certification can guarantee 100 % child-free labour, but if it’s found in our supply chains, we take action immediately.

Ending child labour requires action from everyone: farmers, businesses, buyers, governments, and consumers. Purchasing Fairtrade contributes to farmers building livelihoods where children can go to school rather than work.

💡 Our 2025 Annual Report, ‘Fairness First’, highlights our collective progress alongside farmers, workers, businesses, and partners worldwide in advancing fairer trade.

🌎 Our strong impact continues despite a complex global environment; from geopolitical instability and volatile markets, to climate pressures.

As Fairtrade looks ahead to its 2026–2028 Global Strategy, the focus remains clear:

🧑🏼‍🌾 strengthening farmer resilience
🧑🏼‍🌾 advancing fairer trade systems
🧑🏼‍🌾 scaling digital transparency, and
🧑🏼‍🌾 supporting sustainable supply chains for the future.

Fabiana Aparecida de Souza Silva, a Fairtrade coffee producer in Brazil, as well as a dairy farmer, is one example of how working with nature can create lasting impact – and she’s not alone.

88% of relevant studies on Fairtrade’s impact, from 2021-24, show Fairtrade farmers are adopting climate-resilient farming practices – with ripples that can protect both land and livelihoods.

A fair supply chain also means a sustainable one. This means looking after people as well as the planet.

Our Standards are evolving so producers can focus on the most urgent social and environmental issues that matter to them.

Using a risk-based approach, this proposal moves away from our existing ‘one-size-fits-all’ list of criteria, and:

🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾 addresses the growing risks faced by farmers in a more agile way
🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾 makes it more relevant to producers’ realities
🧑‍🌾👩‍🌾 diverts resources to the most critical activities.

This means farmers will not be burdened with meeting a growing list of criteria not necessarily relevant to them.

Public consultation opens soon, June - August 2026.

Carlito Alves, coffee farmer and manager in Timor-Leste, is one example of how Fairtrade farmers can create lasting change. ☕

87% of relevant studies on Fairtrade's impact show economic benefits for farmers like Carlito and for cooperatives (Evidence Mapping Report 2025).

From improved market access to stronger knowledge, infrastructure, and community resources, these benefits ripple far beyond individual producers and can contribute to fairer, more sustainable and more resilient supply chains.

This , we are listening to the women behind your cup of morning tea.

To mark the day, as well as International Year of the Women Farmer, Network of Asia and Pacific Producers -NAPP spoke with C. Chandramathi, a tea estate worker and Vice President of the Fairtrade Premium Committee at Alton Estate, Horana Plantations PLC, in Sri Lanka.

With more than 15 years in the plantation sector, she shares what it means to be a woman working in tea plantation today, the challenges of climate change and labour shortages, and why being part of Fairtrade gives her a sense of security, recognition and hope for the next generation.

That's right 🧑‍🌾 Because all producers deserve secure and sustainable livelihoods.

🔗 This means resilient and reliable supply chains that respect rights, where responsibility is shared, and producers can build a pathway to decent livelihoods.

🧱 We are building more fairness across the supply chain – underpinned by our strong standards - so that this becomes the norm, not the exception.

🤝 Working with brands such as Coop, Pure Africa Coffee, Marks and Spencer, Ben & Jerry's, Mester Grønn, Colruyt Group, Systembolaget, Nespresso, and Brabantia who also believe that farmers deserve a fairer deal.

A new Fairtrade-commissioned study reveals a significant wage gap for farmworkers in South Africa’s Cape Winelands.

Despite being a key part of a globally competitive wine industry, many workers still can’t cover basic needs like food, housing, healthcare, and education.

Workers here need about €410 to afford a decent standard of living - about 50% more than the sector’s minimum wage of €290.

Closing this gap is possible, but it requires shared responsibility across the entire supply chain.

At Fairtrade, we’re working to help make this a reality through responsible purchasing practices, stronger industrial relations, and collaboration between producers, buyers, and workers.
