What does a sustainable diet of the future look like?
On the occasion of World Home Economics Day 2026, the German Section of the International Federation for Home Economics announced the winners of its nationwide competition “You are what you Eat: Feeding the Future” .
” For the fourth time, good-practice initiatives were recognized that demonstrate how home economics competencies contribute to healthy and sustainable lifestyles – in education, community food services, research, and social practice.
First Prize (shared) Two projects impressed the expert jury with their innovation and strong practical relevance: Stefano Copperi (Christliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft e.V., Nuremberg) – “Enjoy Together – Eat Healthy, Live Consciously” This project turns home economics into a space for social participation in residential care. Residents and staff from different professional backgrounds cook together, create recipe boards, and strengthen everyday skills as well as quality of life. Dr. Heike Müller (Technical University of Berlin) – “SFC – Sustainable Food Culture” This initiative focuses on global knowledge exchange. In collaboration with alumni from 30 countries, approaches for a future-oriented food culture were developed and documented through Global Food Stories and a digital storytelling collection.
Second Prize Adina Wendt (University of Hohenheim) – “Health Compass” A visual food label that provides quick information on nutritional values, level of processing, and CO₂ footprint directly on product packaging.
