On this International Day for Biological Diversity 🌍🌺🌳, we highlight how agricultural biodiversity and underutilized opportunity crops can strengthen climate resilience, sustainable livestock systems, and food security in vulnerable regions. 🌱🐂
In the drylands of Mauritania 🇲🇷, pastoralist communities are cultivating nutrient-rich fodder crops such as niébé (cowpea), Panicum grasses, and Maralfalfa — species well adapted to local conditions and rich in protein. 🌾✨
Using solar-powered irrigation ☀️💧, these crops are grown during the rainy season and stored for use throughout the dry season, providing reliable livestock feed when grazing resources become scarce.
The impacts are significant. Improved animal nutrition increases milk yields 🥛, supports food security, and strengthens rural livelihoods. At the same time, these crops help reduce pressure on overgrazed lands 🌍 and encourage smaller, healthier, and more productive herds.
Through farmer-led innovation and peer-to-peer learning 🤝, these once-overlooked crops are becoming powerful tools for biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and resilience in the Sahel. 💪✨
This project was initiated by Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium and was awarded “best photostory“ in the category “opportunity crops“ in the photocontest by Let‘s Plant e.V. with support from and Tropentag 2025 () .denayer Photo©️Thomas Cytrynowicz and Emilie Tricot

In the drylands of Mauritania – among the countries hardest hit by climate change globally – a promising shift is underway.Pastoralist communities are experimenting with the local production of high-nutrition fodder crops such as niébé (cowpea), Panicum grasses, and Maralfalfa, species underutilised in traditional feed systems, yet rich in protein and well-adapted to local conditions. This photo story documents a growing movement among herders adopting fodder cultivation as a climate-smart strategy. Using solar-powered irrigation, these crops are cultivated during the rainy season, then harvested, dried, and stored in simple shaded conditions, retaining their nutritional value for up to one year. A single bale can feed two cows for three days, enabling some of the lactating cows to remain in the village during the dry season when transhumance is typically required. The benefits are profound. Improved dry-season nutrition extends lactation periods, increases milk yields, and ensures continuous access to dairy products. Milk, once absent from local diets for months, is now available throughout the most resource-scarce time of year. In a culture where milk is both staple and symbol, this shift holds transformative potential, not just for food security, but also for rural economies. Improved fodder production is driving the emergence of a domestic milk value chain, generating income and reducing dependence on imported milk.Through peer-to-peer learning and local innovation, this model is scaling. Lead farmers are training others, encouraging smaller, better-nourished herds that yield more with fewer animals. As communities adapt to climate pressures and resource variability, they are building resilience, ecologically, nutritionally, and economically. These once-neglected fodder crops are becoming powerful catalysts for change, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, survival and sovereignty, whilst advancing climate adaptation in the Sahel.Farmer-led innovation and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange such as the adoption of improved fodder cultivation in Mauritania was initiated and supported by Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium (VSF-B).

🐝🌍 On this World Bee Day, we are celebrating the launch and growth of our project BEES, a Beekeeping Project in the Northern Region of Ghana 🇬🇭 .

This community-driven initiative, supported by Let’s Plant and Cécile Poitevin, recipient of the Let’s Plant Photo Competition award at Tropentag 2025, and implemented with and local communities , is working to establish sustainable beekeeping groups in rural villages including Tarikpaa, Jagrido, Koduzhegu, and Nyankpanzoo.

The project’s goal is not only honey production🍯— it is also about restoring ecosystems 💚, strengthening biodiversity🌺🌼🌱, and building long-term livelihoods 💰 for rural communities.

So far, communities have:
🔨 Built beehives together through hands-on training
🌱 Learned sustainable beekeeping and hive management
👩🏾‍🌾 Organized local beekeeper groups involving women, men, and youth
🐝 Conducted live hive inspections and practical demonstrations
🌳 Discussed farming and tree-planting practices that support pollinators year-round

Bees are essential pollinators for both wild plants and agricultural crops. In Northern Ghana, strengthening bee populations can help improve crop yields, encourage the planting of flowering trees, support land restoration, and increase ecological resilience in areas affected by environmental degradation.

One of the most inspiring parts of the project has been seeing entire communities participate in hive construction and training. In Tarikpaa, some older women used a hammer for the first time while helping build the community’s hives — a reminder that environmental restoration and local empowerment go hand in hand 🌱💪.

As the project continues, communities will move toward honey 🍯 harvesting, processing, and reinvestment, helping create a self-sustaining model ♻️ that supports both people and pollinators 👩‍🌾🐝.

Happy World Bee Day! 🌍🐝
Protecting bees means protecting biodiversity, food systems, and the future of our landscapes 💚.

🌱 Reforestation Altendorf: Making climate action tangible at the local level
Drought 🪾, bark beetles 🪲 , and the impacts of climate change have severely damaged many forest ecosystems across Germany. Near Altendorf-Ersdorf, close to Meckenheim, a degraded forest area is now being restored step by step ❤️‍🩹.
Through our project “Reforestation Altendorf-Ersdorf”, we are planting around 300 climate-resilient, site-adapted trees together with local partners, schoolchildren, and volunteers 👧🧒🪏. In two structured planting areas — so-called “forest islands” — a new, more diverse forest is beginning to grow: more resilient, more biodiverse, and better adapted to future climate conditions. 🌳
But this project is about more than planting trees.
It helps improve water retention 💧 and soil stability, supports natural succession, and turns environmental education into a hands-on experience 💪.
The active involvement of children and volunteers shows how climate action can begin right on our doorstep. 💚
A heartfelt thank you to all local partners, supporters, children, and volunteers who made this project possible — including the .voreifel , Deutsche Kinderdirekthilfe, OGS Altendorf, the private forest owner, and our forestry partners.
Together, we are helping a new forest grow — for more biodiversity, stronger climate resilience, and deeper local connection. 🌍✨
