World Press Freedom Day (3 May): Advancing Freedom, Responsibility, and Balanced Narratives
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day (3 May), the Afghanistan Studies & Cooperation Center e.V. (ASCC) expresses its deep appreciation to journalists, editors, and media institutions for their indispensable role in safeguarding freedom of expression, promoting transparency, and informing societies. In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven environment, the press plays a vital role in raising awareness about local and global developments, countering misinformation, and enabling informed public discourse.
At the same time, this day offers an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility that accompanies press freedom—particularly the importance of accuracy, context, and balance in reporting. While the media rightfully reports on challenges and incidents within society, there are instances where coverage can appear disproportionately focused on negative developments, especially when reporting on refugees, including Afghans in Germany.
For example, isolated incidents involving individuals from refugee backgrounds—such as cases of misconduct or criminal activity—often receive extensive attention and heightened framing in headlines and commentary. While it is essential that such matters are reported transparently, they can inadvertently shape public perception when not accompanied by broader context.
At the same time, positive developments and contributions by refugees are less frequently highlighted. Across Germany, many Afghan refugees have achieved meaningful milestones, including:
Educational success, with individuals completing university degrees and vocational training;
Professional contributions, working as healthcare professionals, engineers, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers;
Civic and cultural engagement, through participation in community initiatives, cultural events, and local associations;
Democratic participation, contributing to civil society and local public life.
It is important to note that a significant proportion of Afghan refugees—many of whom have lived in Germany for two to three decades—are well integrated, economically active, and contributing positively to society. These experiences form an essential part of the overall picture and deserve visibility alongside reporting on challenges.
In this context, ASCC respectfully encourages media professionals—as well as commentators and activists, including those active on social media—to strive for balanced and nuanced storytelling. Highlighting both challenges and achievements strengthens public understanding, supports social cohesion, and reflects the diversity of lived experiences.
ASCC reaffirms its respect for the press and its crucial role in democratic societies. Particularly in the digital age, where information spreads rapidly, the commitment of journalists to responsible and inclusive reporting is more important than ever.
On this World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the achievements of the press and encourage continued efforts toward fair, balanced, and constructive journalism—for the benefit of all communities.
