🌍 Can mining become a positive driver for land restoration?

For the first time at a United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification COP, leaders from governments, the mining industry, Indigenous communities, civil society and international organizations gathered in the Action Dome during COP17 Mongolia Finance Day for a landmark session: "Leadership for a Land-Positive Future: High Level Forum of Mining Industry Leaders."

Co-organized by the G20 Global Land Initiative and the Business Council of Mongolia / Монголын бизнесийн зөвлөл, this dialogue explored how responsible mining and post-mining land restoration can support the global transition to renewable energy while delivering water stewardship, biodiversity gains, and sustainable livelihoods.

💡 Key Takeaways

📌 Post-Mining Restoration as the Norm: As demand for critical minerals expands, early restoration planning and adherence to international best practices must become standard industry practice.
📌 The "4Cs" Approach: Delivering responsible stewardship requires active, transparent collaboration across Countries, Companies, Cities and Citizens.
📌 Data & Local Knowledge: Sound baseline data, scientific monitoring and the meaningful inclusion of Indigenous and local knowledge are essential for long-term impact.
📌 Pathways Forward: Participants supported establishing a dedicated mining theme/forum under the UNCCD Business4Land (B4L) framework.

Together, we are building cross-sector pathways to ensure resource stewardship leaves ecosystems and local communities stronger for generations to come. 🌱

While this COP17 Mongolia is buzzing with participants, other side events took place outside the of the venue. One such event was the Nomadic Futures Conference organized by International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations and University of Oxford.

On the 3rd and last day of the conference, presenters traveled to the Mongolian Nomads World Cultural Festival and among a hundred yurts, one yurt showcased films made by or about pastoral communities.

One of the films that showed the reality of pastoral communities living in the jaws of mines, moved the entire theatre audience into tears.

COP17 has provided a unique and important space for those who chose to use their power and funding for things that matter this .

The 4th edition of the Global Changemaker Academy for Parliamentarians is officially underway in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, alongside UNCCD COP17 Mongolia.

This week, 25 parliamentarians from 24 countries are coming together with a shared purpose to move from ambition to action on land restoration and to turn global commitments into concrete legislation, investment and accountability at home.

Through masterclasses, dialogue, and a parliamentary forum, we are creating space to learn from one another, share practical experience and focus on what it takes to deliver real change. Because commitments matter but implementation matters more.

Follow along this week as we learn, collaborate and work toward action that lasts.

WAGAKI WISCHNEWSKI, Communications Officer, G20 Global Land Initiative:
🌎By 2040, today’s young people will be the generation carrying forward the work to combat land degradation and advance land restoration. That is why the G20 Global Land Initiative sees youth not simply as future participants, but as an important source of new ideas, innovation, and practical solutions for land restoration.
As Wagaki Wischnewski emphasized, many young people are already developing innovative responses to challenges they face in their own communities. However, one of their biggest obstacles is the lack of resources and institutional support needed to turn those ideas into practical, scalable solutions. Supporting youth therefore means more than simply listening to their voices—it also means creating the enabling environment, resources, and institutional mechanisms that allow their ideas and startups to grow and make a real impact.
