“At SB64, the COP31 Presidency announced key priorities, including the “35 by 35” electrification target, which aims to raise electricity’s share of final energy demand from just over 20% today to 35% by 2035. This is a positive step. For Africa, where electrification remains a major challenge, the target must go beyond grid expansion. It should address transmission losses, accelerate energy access through decentralized renewable energy solutions; the fastest and most cost-effective way to power rural communities ,and enable productive use of renewable energy to strengthen climate resilience and support economic development”

🌍 We are calling for ACTION — NOW!

Communities across Africa are already living the climate crisis. Floods. Droughts. Displacement. Lost livelihoods. And yet, adaptation finance remains chronically underfunded and out of reach for those who need it most.

We stand together — farmers, fisherfolk, women, youth, civil society, and frontline communities — in a cross-constituent demand:

✅ SCALE UP adaptation finance — now, not later.
✅ SIMPLIFY access so local communities can actually reach the funds.
✅ DELIVER on the promises made to the most climate-vulnerable nations.
✅ ENSURE finance is needs-based, grant-led, and equity-driven.

The adaptation gap is not a funding gap — it is a political will gap.

We refuse to wait. Our communities cannot afford to.

While Muslims are fasting and Christians are observing Lent, many countries across West Africa are also enduring extreme heat , bad air from harmattan and harsh weather conditions. For the past three days especially, temperatures have been intense, making daily life and especially fasting even more physically demanding.

These conditions remind us that climate change is not a distant problem; it is already affecting our health, our livelihoods, and even how we observe our faith. Rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves are placing extra strain on vulnerable communities, particularly those who must work outdoors or have limited access to water and cooling.

This season of reflection and sacrifice should also be a moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to care for the Earth and for one another. Climate action is not just an environmental issue it is a human and moral responsibility that affects us all.

2nd Italy–Africa Summit in Addis Ababa (13 February 2026)

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni participated in the 2nd Italy–Africa Summit last week, and addressed the 39th African Union General Assembly the following day as Guest of Honour. This confirms Italy’s growing Africa strategy under the Mattei Plan launched in 2024.

A major announcement is Italy’s intention to convert African debt, including transforming the debt of the most fragile and vulnerable countries into investments.

This could be a positive step, if it delivers real fiscal space and supports Africa’s development priorities. But if this “debt transformation” becomes a vehicle to secure extractive partnerships (including gas) or strengthen migration-control cooperation, it will be viewed as transactional and politically counterproductive.

The credibility of this initiative will depend on clear details:

- Which countries qualify as “fragile and vulnerable”?
- Will the conversion be transparent, additional, and non-debt creating?
- Will investments prioritise adaptation, water, health, and renewables?
