🌍 Solidarity statement At the Launch of the “Africa Can’t Wait” Campaign in Addis Ababa, Ethopia

At the launch of the “Africa Can’t Wait” campaign, the CAN Africa Regional Coordinator Mr Baboucarr Nyang joined faith leaders, civil society organisations, climate advocates, young people and communities at the Interfaith Voices for Just Climate Action gathering, raising a united voice for urgent and just climate action.

Across our different faith traditions, we may worship differently, but we share a common responsibility: to protect life, care for creation and stand with communities facing the impacts of the climate crisis.

Africa Can’t Wait. Our people cannot wait for more promises and declarations without action. We need climate finance that reaches communities, stronger support for adaptation and loss and damage, a just energy transition, resilient food systems and accountability.

Africa is not asking for charity. Africa is demanding climate justice.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and the entire JVE community. His commitment to climate justice and Africa’s environmental movement will be deeply missed.

As the CAN Africa Strategy Meeting enters its third day, members and partners are coming together to shape the strategic pillars that will guide the organisation’s work over the next five years.

This is more than a strategy meeting—it is a moment to turn Africa’s climate priorities into collective action. Working with members, partners, allies and movements across the continent to bring their voices, expertise and ambition to the table. Together, we must build a stronger, united and more influential climate movement that can challenge injustice, influence policy, mobilise resources and deliver real change for African communities.

The next five years demand action—not promises. Africa’s climate future is being shaped now, and CAN Africa is ready to lead with purpose, solidarity and impact.

🌍 Opening of the CAN Africa Strategy Meeting

The CAN Africa Strategy Meeting is officially underway, bringing together African civil society, partners, and climate justice actors to shape a stronger and more unified African climate agenda for Africa.

Opening the meeting, the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) Chair, Nana Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, called for real action—not empty promises—on Africa’s climate future. He highlighted the urgent need for a functional Just Transition Work Program,protection of informal workers, and climate finance that responds to Africa’s realities rather than unfair trade barriers.

As Africa prepares for COP31, the message is clear: “Africa needs a climate system built around African realities, where political ambition translates into concrete action, justice, finance, and lasting solutions for communities and workers”.

Together, we are reflecting on how Africa can pursue a just, inclusive, and equitable energy transition that protects livelihoods, creates decent work, strengthens local economies, and ensures that workers and communities are not left behind. “At SB64, the COP31 Presidency announced key priorities, including the “35 by 35” electrification target, which aims to raise electricity’s share of final energy demand from just over 20% today to 35% by 2035. This is a positive step. For Africa, where electrification remains a major challenge, the target must go beyond grid expansion. It should address transmission losses, accelerate energy access through decentralized renewable energy solutions; the fastest and most cost-effective way to power rural communities ,and enable productive use of renewable energy to strengthen climate resilience and support economic development”

🌍 We are calling for ACTION — NOW!

Communities across Africa are already living the climate crisis. Floods. Droughts. Displacement. Lost livelihoods. And yet, adaptation finance remains chronically underfunded and out of reach for those who need it most.

We stand together — farmers, fisherfolk, women, youth, civil society, and frontline communities — in a cross-constituent demand:

✅ SCALE UP adaptation finance — now, not later.
✅ SIMPLIFY access so local communities can actually reach the funds.
✅ DELIVER on the promises made to the most climate-vulnerable nations.
✅ ENSURE finance is needs-based, grant-led, and equity-driven.

The adaptation gap is not a funding gap — it is a political will gap.

We refuse to wait. Our communities cannot afford to.

CAN Africa strongly condemns the current situation in Iran and stands in full solidarity with the people of Iran and the people of the Middle East who continue to suffer the consequences of this escalating conflict.
