In 2020, during the COVID lockdown, I found myself back in my village with an unexpected opportunity.

During that period I completed 20 different online courses, including a professional certification in Digital Psychology. The experience opened my eyes to something powerful: access to knowledge can completely transform how people see their possibilities.

Yet in my community, many young people had little or no access to digital learning opportunities. Brilliant minds were simply disconnected from the tools that could expand their horizons.

So I gathered a few children in my locality and began teaching them during the pandemic.

What began as a small informal learning group soon grew into something larger.

That moment became the beginning of Emancipation Development Initiative.

From those early sessions, the initiative has grown steadily.

Since then we have:

• Trained 380+ youths in digital skills through the My Skill Bootcamp program
• Provided computer literacy training for 127 hearing-impaired students
• Counselled over 700 students on career pathways
• Donated computers to schools to improve digital learning access

What started with a few students during a global crisis has become a growing mission: expanding access to knowledge, skills, and opportunity for young people who might otherwise be left behind.

And we are only getting started.

Opportunity should not depend on where someone is born or the circumstances they start from.

Emancipation Development Initiative exists to expand access to skills, training, and pathways that enable people to build dignified and sustainable livelihoods.

We believe that when people are given real opportunities, they can transform their own futures and strengthen their communities.

This page documents that journey.

Talent exists everywhere.
Opportunity does not.

Across many communities, young people face barriers to skills, training, and economic participation.

When opportunity is absent, potential remains unrealized.

Emancipation Development Initiative works to close this gap by expanding access to practical skills and pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

In 2020, a community development project in Benue State set out to address a simple but powerful problem: many young people lack access to skills, opportunity, and pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

What began as a small initiative soon expanded into training programmes, mentorship, and community support activities aimed at creating real economic opportunities.

That work became the foundation for the Emancipation Development Initiative.

Access to digital skills can transform opportunity.

Through this initiative, 127 students received training in ICT literacy and essential digital skills, equipping them with tools that can open pathways to education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Expanding access to technology is one of the most powerful ways to unlock potential and create dignified livelihoods.

Many young people make career decisions without guidance, exposure, or mentorship.

Through our Career Tour programme, we visited secondary schools in Gombe State to speak with students about:

• career pathways
• skills for the future
• personal development
• opportunity and responsibility

These conversations help students see possibilities beyond their immediate environment.

Because opportunity often begins with exposure.

Access to technology is essential for modern education.

To support digital learning, two internet-enabled desktop computers were donated to Government Junior Secondary School, Tumfure, Gombe State.

Expanding access to technology helps students develop digital literacy and prepares them for opportunities in an increasingly digital world.

Community change is never achieved alone.

The work of empowering young people and expanding opportunity is made possible through collaboration with schools, local leaders, and partner organisations.

We are grateful for the recognition and encouragement from communities who believe in the importance of investing in young people.

Real change begins with opportunity.

Across communities, many young people possess talent, ambition, and resilience — but lack access to the skills, mentorship, and platforms needed to thrive.

The Emancipation Development Initiative exists to help bridge that gap.

Through training programmes, mentorship, and community partnerships, we work to create pathways that allow young people to unlock their potential and build sustainable futures.

Because when opportunity is created, transformation becomes possible.

In Africa, 1 in 4 young people are not in education, employment, or training.

This statistic is often discussed as a labour market problem.
But at its core, it is a CAPACITY PROBLEM.

When young people are disconnected from systems that build skills, experience, and networks, the result is not just unemployment; it is the gradual erosion of human potential.

Development is not only about creating jobs.
It is about building the capabilities that allow people to participate meaningfully in economic life.

Skills development, accessible training pathways, and inclusive learning systems are therefore not peripheral interventions. They are foundational.

At the **Emancipation Development Initiative, this is why our work focuses on structured capability-building, linking training directly to real economic participation.

Because development begins when people are equipped not only to survive but also to contribute, create, and build dignified livelihoods.

Why does the Emancipation Development Initiative (EDI) exist?

Because talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.

Across many communities, young people, especially women and disadvantaged groups, have the potential to build, innovate, and lead. Yet too often, that potential is limited by barriers in education, access, and opportunity.

EDI was founded on a simple belief: human development should not depend on circumstance or geography.

Our mission is to support initiatives that expand opportunity through education, skills development, empowerment, and community engagement.

Empowering people. Strengthening communities.
