Our vision is a just transition to a fossil-free, renewables-based European power sector by 2035.

Beyond Fossil Fuels is a collective civil society campaign committed to ensuring all of Europe’s electricity is generated from fossil-free, renewable energy by 2035. It expands and builds upon the Europe Beyond Coal campaign, and its goal of a coal-free Europe in power and heat by 2030 at the latest. Our vision is of a European energy system predominantly powered by wind and solar energy, that min

imises waste, and maximises efficiency through the electrification of heating, industry and transport, the insulation of buildings and delivery of power via smart technology. This system-wide transformation should be ambitious and fair, protecting people, communities and nature, and result in the dismantling of the fossil fuel industry that drives up costs, finances armed conflicts, damages our health, undermines our democracies, and is responsible for environmental destruction and worsening climate change. The Beyond Fossil Fuels campaign is funded by the European Climate Foundation, ClimateWorks and the Schwab charitable foundation. It is legally a part of Climate Action Network Europe, which is based in Brussels. The campaign has close ties with Beyond Coal campaigns in the U.S., Australia, Korea and Japan.

Still reeling after the heatwave? Tired of paying some of Europe’s most expensive electricity bills?

Bad news if you live in Germany, the Bundestag just decided to make them even more expensive.

Instead of creating a market where clean flexibility solutions can compete on an equal playing field, the contentious Strom VKG law will subsidise new fossil gas. Not only that, but the bid cap for new capacity was increased by 41%, to €244,000/MW, now the highest in Europe.

This is a scheme that could cost consumers more than €4 billion by 2031 in household electricity bills… in a country that already has the second-highest household electricity prices in Europe.

Capacity markets in Europe are turning into the Wild West. The European Commission needs to stand up and enforce its own rules and stop national schemes from locking in expensive fossil gas.

We joined thousands in 🇩🇪 Hamm to oppose RWE’s new gas plant. It’s Europe’s first large-scale public mobilisation against a new gas plant project
This goes beyond local action. Opposition to fossil fuel expansion is growing everywhere.
Why should public money be spent on more gas when renewables and clean flexibility solutions are already available? Taxpayer-backed subsidies for projects like RWE’s risk locking us into fossil fuel dependence for years to come.

Germany should be leading the energy transition, not investing in a fossil fuel dead end.

Europe is in the midst of another fossil fuel shock, so naturally TotalEnergies & EPH are doubling down on fossil gas to exacerbate the problem.
Our new report shows how their new joint venture, “TTEP”, is a risky bet that will:
❌ deepen Europe’s dependence on LNG imports from Russia and the US
❌ expose households to volatile prices
❌ lock in fossil fuel infrastructure
❌ divert billions away from clean energy
The companies behind this deal are loading the dice against consumers while rigging the game for more fossil gas dependence, while they make huge profits off the energy crisis.
And despite their so-called “flexgen” narrative, most of the gas plants in their deal are poorly suited to support a renewables-based power system.
Instead, what we need are homegrown renewables and for financiers and policymakers to favour the policy and economic conditions for clean flexibility to rapidly scale.

2026 is going to be a big year for clean flexibility. In June and by July, EU Member States will need to prepare their Flexibility Needs Assessments, which should set ambitious national targets for non-fossil flexibility that align with climate and energy goals.

Europe could deploy 700+ GW of fossil-free flexibility by 2050, nearly 4× the continent’s gas plant capacity today.
That’s the scale at which clean flexibility can replace fossil gas while keeping power systems reliable!
Remember, fossil gas drove the 10× spike in electricity prices during the 2021–2022 energy crisis, and today’s war in Iran once again highlights the risks of fossil fuel dependence.
📅 By July, EU countries must submit Flexibility Needs Assessments to the EU, a key opportunity to accelerate clean flexibility and move beyond fossil gas.

While Siemens Energy is celebrating record revenues in its first ever public AGM and continuing to promote its ‘green’ credentials, we can’t forget that it’s also the second largest global supplier of gas turbines for gas-fired plants under development around the world.
We came by to say:
✔️Phase out gas turbines.
✔️Power data centres with renewables, not fossil gas.
✔️Align the business model with the transition it claims to support.
