Today, on May 21, we celebrate the birthday of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov. Nuclear physicist and lifelong advocate for human rights, his commitment to justice and peace remains all the more relevant in 2026.

Exiled for 7 years, dared to speak out against the Soviet regime. Just a few years before his death, he funded to study Soviet human rights violations. Thirty years later, the Russian government has banned any activities of Memorial in the country, and recently designated it an “extremist organisation”. It’s a stark reminder that fighting for civil liberties is still considered controversial and scare authoritarian regimes.

Sakharov’s birthday is therefore not only the remembrance of one man’s life, but also of all those criminalised for their actions in favour of freedom, anywhere in the world.
