In a joint statement, the Africa Group for Justice and Accountability (AGJA) and the Wayamo Foundation condemn the horrendous violence, that appears to be genocidal, being perpetrated in El Fasher, Darfur, and call on all actors to use whatever power and influence they possess to stop the atrocities. Wayamo and the Africa Group also urge states and international bodies to adopt an all-hands-on-deck approach to accountability, sparing no effort to bring perpetrators of atrocities in Sudan to justice.

When regimes collapse, the first thing officials and state authorities implicated in atrocities do is pretend to be someone else. Some try to save themselves by insisting they were opposition figures all along, or officers who were just trying to challenge the regime and mitigate its brutality from the inside.

Others know that attempting to do so is futile; there’s too much blood on their hands. They change stripes and clothes, quite literally, to present themselves as innocent civilians. They hastily marshal whatever resources and assets they have and look for a quick exit, preferably to locations with diasporas where they can blend in. As they jump ship, these officials – many of whom are also perpetrators – create opportunities to hold them to account.

How do we find them before they slip away and manage to disguise themselves among unsuspecting communities?

Excellent new report from REDRESS on ways to pursue accountability in

Last April, an armed conflict erupted in 🇸🇩between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces. There is a large body of credible evidence implicating both sides in serious human rights abuses and possible war crimes and crimes against humanity.

REDRESS is attending the 54th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in UN Geneva from today to discuss the findings of a new report on how to secure accountability for the serious human rights violations in Sudan.

The report sets out recommendations to ensure human rights protection and accountability for the human rights violations being committed in Sudan.

The Wayamo Foundation is looking for an early career professional multimedia manager to help produce Wayamo’s Arabic-language video content and to manage the bilingual justice hub website.

The ideal candidate would be able to edit videos, manage subtitles, and contribute to our project activities in Berlin, and abroad. The candidate should be based in Berlin, but remote work arrangements could be considered for those who fit the criteria perfectly. Ideally, the candidate will be available to work between 15-20 hours per week.

To reflect on different accountability mechanisms for serious human rights violations and international crimes, including the exercise of universal jurisdiction, the Wayamo Foundation and the Prosecution Training Institute (PTI) co-hosted a symposium on “Domestic accountability mechanisms for international crimes: new developments and opportunities in East Africa” on the 7th of September 2023 at the PTI in Nairobi, Kenya.

The event brought together international and Kenyan experts and prosecutors to discuss international criminal justice themes. The symposium was opened by Jacinta Nyamosi, Deputy Director Department of Offences against the person, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Kenya (ODPP) who spoke in representation of Dorcas Oduor, Secretary of Public Prosecutions, ODPP, Kenya.

From 11-13 September 2023, the Wayamo Foundation convened a three-day workshop for journalists in Nairobi titled “Responsible Media for Justice and Accountability in Sudan” aimed at enhancing media reporting on justice-related matters within the context of Sudan. This workshop, conducted as part of Wayamo’s ongoing “Capacity building for civil society and the justice sector in Sudan” project, bolsters the reporting capabilities of Sudanese journalists, enabling them to comprehensively cover critical justice-related issues.

From 11-13 September 2023, the Wayamo Foundation convened a three-day workshop for journalists in Nairobi titled "Responsible Media for Justice and Accountability in Sudan" aimed at enhancing media reporting on justice-related matters within the context of Sudan.

The Wayamo Foundation hosted a three-day workshop in , Kenya, from 6-8 September 2023, on the topic of “modern forms of evidence and the potential application of universal jurisdiction in the East African region for international crimes committed in .” The workshop brought together Sudanese lawyers and human rights defenders, including those from , with experience in strategic litigation and the fight against impunity.
