On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.
On July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration, Americans in Berlin are gathering in front of our Embassy at Pariser Platz to DEFEND DEMOCRACY and FIGHT FASCISM.
At 2:00 pm, American Voices Abroad Berlin is joining with Indivisible Berlin and Democrats Abroad, Berlin Region, to celebrate what should be celebrated and fight what should be fought. Bring your friends. Children are welcome.
Before the demonstration, at the Hamburger Bahnhof from 12:00 noon until 1:00, Heather O’Donnell, pianist, psychologist, and author, will play Frederick Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated! (1975), 36 variations on the Chilean protest song El pueblo unido jamás será vencido, written by Sergio Ortega shortly before the military coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in 1973. Ortega’s song became an international anthem of resistance to dictatorship and political repression. After the performance, Heather will invite the guests to head with her to the rally.
