Russia continues to cause damage not only to Ukrainian cities and infrastructure - but also to the environment. On May 8, sunflower oil pollution - caused by a Russian strike on the port infrastructure of Chornomorsk on April 26 - reached the coastline of Tuzlivski Estuaries National Nature Park.

Park staff reported that oil was washed onto sandy spits and protected areas. These are the very places where hundreds of migratory bird species stop to rest. Rare species make their home here - and in recent years, pink flamingos began nesting in the Tuzlivski Estuaries for the first time in Ukraine.

For many, this is just a stretch of coastline on the map of Odesa Oblast. In reality, it is a unique natural territory that deserves protection.

Sadly, the destruction of protected areas has become a systemic problem of this war. Since the full-scale invasion began, nature reserves have regularly suffered from fires, water pollution, ecosystem destruction, and the fallout from attacks on critical infrastructure.

For places like this, recovery cannot wait until the war is over. The more we invest in their protection now, the greater the chance of saving these ecosystems from irreversible loss.

This is why we support local initiatives working toward the long-term protection of vulnerable ecosystems.

One of the projects that received our grant support through Resilient Roots and GreenRoots Hub is focused on restoring protective forest belts around Tuzlivski Estuaries National Nature Park. It will create a natural barrier that helps reduce agricultural chemical runoff into waterways, provides habitat for birds, insects, and small mammals, and strengthens the area's resilience to climate change.

We are glad we could support this initiative. Stories like this serve as a reminder of why investing in environmental protection during wartime is a necessity - not an option.

The more local initiatives work to preserve vulnerable ecosystems right now, the greater the chance of keeping these territories alive for future generations. 🌿

What does it mean to rebuild your life while caring for someone else? Natalia and Anastasiia are doing exactly that. After fleeing the war in Ukraine, they are building new lives in Berlin while caring for their children with disabilities. Their stories speak of strength, responsibility, and everyday resilience - often unseen.

This video is part of our awareness raising campaign on Ukrainian refugee caregivers across Europe.

Safety is not enough. Real integration means access to support, clear information, and systems that work - so that no family has to navigate this alone.

This video was created by Austausch e.V. as part of the INKuLtur-programme (Berlin), Lietuvos negalios organizacijų forumas, the Polskie Forum Osób z Niepełnosprawnościami Polish Forum for People with Disabilities within the framework of the project "It’s Ability!". "Gedenken muss nicht still sein" – "Remembrance must not be silent."

Last week's EVZ HISTODAY EVZ Foundation in Berlin (7–8 May 2026) brought together participants from 15 countries to ask how memory work can stay alive – and democratic – in times of war and polarisation.

The Austausch e.V. Team presented our trilateral project Remembrance In Dialogue, implemented together with NGO Інша Освіта / Insha Osvita and Fundacja Zapomniane, in which we worked on developing a safe space for Polish, Ukrainian, and German experts to navigate difficult, sometimes diverging histories with care and respect. Our joint trip to Ivano-Frankivsk was a strong reminder of what becomes possible when memory is approached as a shared, fragile practice.

We shared the slot with Associate Professor Antal Attila from Hungary, who walked us through how the politics of memory has transformed in Hungary over time. Adding a Hungarian layer was both rewarding and challenging, especially in light of the Orbán government's instrumentalisation of historical narratives. Yet that complexity is exactly what these conversations need.

Across 30 sessions, HISTODAY ranged from "Holocaust in 60 seconds" on TikTok to remembrance under Russia's war against Ukraine, public history in business, marginalised voices, and the memory of Jewish resistance in WWII.

Many thanks to the Stiftung EVZ for the project support and the brilliant gathering.

25 years of the Stiftung Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft (EVZ) – KEINE ZEIT ZU VERGESSEN.
