Weaving Back to Common Grounds marks the final stage of the two-year project Have We Passed Peak Collective, developed in collaboration with Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg and other institutions.

The exhibition explores themes of closeness and distance, change and transformation, and the notion of “common ground” in times of societal division and political polarization.

The works on display – both collaborative and individual – weave together questions of presence and absence, connection and separation. They trace the shifting contours of collective and individual experience within shared spaces.
They invite reflection on how proximity, distance, and transformation shape both artistic practice and the ways we inhabit common ground – especially in moments of instability.

A publication accompanying the exhibition provides further insight into the project.
On 14.11.2025, a public talk with invited guests will explore collective work in the context of social and political transformation, as well as shifting conditions within the art field.

This exhibition has been made possible with the support of Stiftung Kunstfonds, the State of Schleswig-Holstein, the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg Fellowship Program, and the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg City Gallery (.innenhaus_lauenburg).

We invite you to an evening of conversation and exchange, focusing on the challenges and possibilities of working collectively in the arts.

Weaving Back to Common Grounds marks the final stage of the two-year project Have We Passed Peak Collective, initiated by Observant Thick Conversation (otc) in collaboration with Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg, Lothringer 13 Halle (Munich), KH Künstler:innenhaus Bremen, and ACUD Galerie (Berlin).

The project explores questions of collective practice, shared authorship, and collaboration in times of social and cultural transformation. It reflects on how individual and collective efforts intersect — and on the fragile conditions that make collaboration possible.

To conclude the project, we invite you to a public talk on collective work in the arts, moderated by Laura Seidel .lr (curator), with:
Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius (performative architect & cultural activist)
Alexander Klaubert & Rahel große Lambers (otc)
Living Room Collective .collective

The event will be accompanied by a performance by Francis Kussatz .

On this occasion, the publication Weaving Back to Common Grounds will be launched. It expands on the project’s core themes and gathers voices and reflections from its two-year trajectory. The publication includes an Artist Rider – a practical tool for artists, collectives, and institutions to support collaborative work.

Contributions come from Lisa Britzger, Rahel große Lambers, Alexander Klaubert .klaubert , Clara Kramer, Francis Kussatz, Marita Landgraf, Anne Meerpohl , Nadja Quante , and otc – Observant Thick Conversation. Graphic design by Kiki Park

Printed copies will be available exclusively at the event. Free, but limited.

This project was developed as part of the 2023/2024 fellowship at Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg .innenhaus_lauenburg and made possible with the support of Stiftung Kunstfonds, the State of Schleswig-Holstein, the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg Fellowship Program, and the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg City Gallery

We end our year with a short throwback to our installation: „Chapter 1: Out of Your Head and Into my Body“ at , which was part of the project „PART TIME COMMITMENT SERIES. Chapter 1-4: Labor, time, resources, solidarity“. We will share more impressions from our long-term project in the new year, „Have we passed peak collective?“ that has taken place in Lauenburg , Bremen , and Munich so far. 🌞

It was an important moment for us this year to reflect together artistically on our collective practice and find new ways to express ourselves. We thank Lothrninger13, hosts, and guests who supported us from start to finish and made us feel welcome in Munich.

„In the Lothringer 13 Halle, otc takes up various aspects of collective labour and translates them into a site-specific installation made from found materials and elements from the art space’s storrage. Through various components in the space, which are connected to each other, face each other, hold each other, come uncomfortably close to each other, stretch apart, lean against each other or support each other, recurring physical and emotional situations from the collective labour are suggested and made tangible for visitors...
The chapters of PART TIME COMMITMENT SERIES are developed by various collectives and groups and see themselves as open experimental arrangements, working laboratories, shared spaces for research, discussion and experience.
Excursions in the form of lectures, discussion rounds and reading groups invite further contextualisation and exchange.

A rare moment at the end of the slides is a photo of the collective; don’t forget to swipe to the end! 📸

Even though we’re a bit late, we would like to once again extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, guests, and the Künstler:innenhaus Bremen for making the event “Have we Passed Peak Collective?” in the gallery of the Künstler:innenhaus Bremen possible.
We brought many questions and left with even more, along with new approaches and numerous impressions. Staying in dialogue and finding ways to create and defend sustainable structures is critical, especially in such times.
Among the guests were Marita Landgraf (Artistic Director of Künstlerhaus Lauenburg), Vincent Schier (Independent Curator), and Katrin Hylla (Artistic Co-Director of Schwankhalle Bremen).

📍We are pleased to announce our exciting news. From now on, we have a new name: otc - Observant Thick Conversation. 🦋

This decision has been preceded by a year of continuous exchange and discussion. At the end of 2021, after our fourth project together and the first three years as a collective, during which we have come to appreciate the collective practice and many changes have happened individually as well as between us, we were keen to try this experiment. We wanted to take advantage of this special opportunity that working in a collective gives and reflect the growth and change that has happened in this process. Therefore, for the last year we had decided on the transitional name Yours truly, LoL as a farewell to our previous name Law of Life (LoL) from which the decision of separation was very difficult for us.

With Observant Thick Conversation we’ve decided to choose a name that describes our daily working practice. The core routine of our collective is that besides the intensive project work we have established a continuously talking practice mostly on a two-week basis since 2020. That means that a lot of our work happens unseen and unheard to the public and differs decisively to project orientated collective practices.

At the same time, it sums up our ongoing intention on how to approach a topic, a situation, a space and how we wish to engage and come together with other people. It is our first and foremost important goal to enable conversations.

Love,
otc

Law of Life

Law of Life is an open fluid artist group, who have set their sights on creating a close dialogue between artists as well as supporting each other in the struggle for survival that artists are often faced with. The group was founded by Francis Kussatz and Alexander Klaubert in 2018. Thematic priority are social conditions and the subsequent problems – revealing them as well as creating hypothetical consecutive reactions.
