Houshamadyan mourns the passing of clarinetist, ensemble director, and musicologist Hachig Kazarian, a distinguished specialist in Ottoman Armenian music.
When Houshamadyan began publishing songs once sung in the Armenian provinces of the Ottoman Empire, Hachig Kazarian was among the first to encourage our work. It was also he who advised us not to use Western classical musical notation when presenting these songs, pointing out that such notation could distort the authentic character of Armenian provincial music. Preserving this authenticity lay at the heart of Hachig Kazarian’s approach to music.
He belonged to a generation of Armenian American musicians who played, sang, and created music inspired by the rich and diverse musical heritage of Ottoman Armenians. They were not constrained by nationalist conceptions of music that sought to prescribe how people should sing, play, or dance. Hachig Kazarian performed and created within this world of musical diversity and encouraged others not to abandon this heritage.
A couple of years ago, he also published a book containing a wealth of information on Ottoman Armenian music and the continuation of this musical heritage in the United States.
A great master has left us, but his music and his ideas about Armenian music will continue to live on for many years to come.
Խաչիկ Ղազարեան (1941-2026)
Յուշամատեանը կը գուժէ քլարինէթահար, նուագախումբի ղեկավար եւ երաժշտագէտ Խաչիկ Ղազարեանի մահը։ Ան օսմանեան հայկական երաժշտութեան հմուտ մասնագէտ էր։
Երբ Յուշամատեանի մէջ սկսանք հրատարակել օսմանեան հայկական գաւառներուն մէջ երգուող երգեր, Խաչիկ Ղազարեան առաջիններէն էր, որ քաջալերեց մեզ։ Ինքն էր նաեւ, որ մեզի խորհուրդ տուաւ իւրաքանչիւր երգի ներկայացման ժամանակ չգործածել արեւմտեան դասական նօթագրութիւն՝ նկատի ունենալով, որ ան կրնայ աղաւաղել հայկական գաւառային երաժշտութեան հարազատութիւնը։ Իսկ այս հարազատութեան պահպանումը Խաչիկ Ղազարեանի երաժշտական աշխարհին նշանաբանն էր։
Ան մաս կը կազմէր ամերիկահայ երաժիշտներու այն սերունդին, որոնք նուագեցին, երգեցին եւ ստեղծագործեցին՝ ներշնչուելով օսմանեան հայկական բազմազան երգային-երաժշտական ժառանգութենէն։ Անոնք հեռու մնացին երաժշտական ազգայնական այն յղացքներէն, որոնք կը փորձէին հասարակութեան պարտադրել, թէ ինչպէ՛ս պէտք է երգել, նուագել կամ պարել։ Խաչիկ Ղազարեան նուագեց եւ ստեղծագործեց այս բազմազանութեան միջավայրին մէջ եւ ուրիշներն ալ քաջալերեց չհրաժարելու այս ժառանգութենէն։
Քանի մը տարի առաջ ան հրատարակեց նաեւ գիրք մը, ուր հարուստ տեղեկութիւններ կը ներկայացնէր օսմանեան հայկական երաժշտութեան եւ Միացեալ Նահանգներու մէջ երաժշտական այս ժառանգութեան շարունակութեան մասին։
Մեծ վարպետը մեզմէ առյաւէտ բաժնուեցաւ, բայց անոր երաժշտութիւնը եւ հայկական երաժշտութեան վերաբերեալ անոր տեսակէտները վստահաբար տակաւին երկար կեանք ունին իրենց առջեւ։
