Revitalizing Ecosystems Through Experientialisation: Outdoor Education from Theory to Practice 🌿

From October 13 to 20, 2024, German team had the honor of representing Citizen of Europe at the Erasmus+ training course held in Vienna, Austria. 🇦🇹

This inspiring initiative brought together youth workers and leaders from across Europe to explore how outdoor education can be used as a powerful tool to address pressing social and environmental challenges, including mental health, inclusion, and sustainability.

Key Objectives of the Project:

🌱 Redefine outdoor education with a focus on safety, inclusivity, and well-being

🌱 Develop and implement accessible methods that cater to participants of all abilities

🌱 Encourage the use of public spaces, such as parks and community gardens, for educational purposes

🌱 Equip youth workers with tools to tackle complex issues like climate change and mental health

During this enriching experience, we delved into:

✅ Principles and theories of outdoor education

✅ Practical approaches to designing nature-based learning activities

✅ Building connections with participants from across Europe and fostering a spirit of collaboration

The project was co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, underscoring the importance of investing in innovative practices that empower young people and promote cross-cultural understanding.

We remember the third day of “Revitalizing Ecosystems Through Experientialization” in mid-October in Vienna. 🏛

This time the focus was on practical examples. 💪 A meditative morning walk 🧘‍♂️was combined with reflections on our own relationship to nature and the environment, our own ecological footprint, powerlessness in the face of global climate change and opportunities for action and empowerment in everyday life and in our own environment.

The following exercise was somewhere between land art 🖼 and upcycling or recycling art. ♻The task: to create a work of art from things lying around outside, tell a story and convey a message.📨

The afternoon finally took us to the Kahlenberg with a wonderful view over Vienna. 🏞Without cell phones 📵and digital distractions, we explored nature in silence and mindfulness. Partnership and trust exercises as well as a garbage collection challenge rounded off the experience. 🚮

This outdoor education training brings together 33 youth workers from Austria 🇦🇹, Germany 🇩🇪, Greece 🇬🇷, Italy 🇮🇹, Poland 🇵🇱, Croatia 🇭🇷, Czechia 🇨🇿, Slovakia 🇸🇰, Hungary 🇭🇺, and Slovenia 🇸🇮.

On the second day, we focused on Youth Work Challenges with Young People, discussing the various barriers and opportunities when engaging youth in outdoor education and environmental issues. We also explored the role of youth work in tackling youth issues, delving into the critical role of youth workers as facilitators of positive change through experiential outdoor activities 🏞️.

In the afternoon, we dived deep into the Principles of Outdoor Education, where participants learned foundational theories and methods. Through practical exercises and group discussions, everyone got a hands-on understanding of how outdoor education can empower young people and foster a deeper connection to nature 🌲.

🌿🌍On 14th October, we kicked off the training course "Revitalizing Ecosystems Through Experientialisation," taking place in Vienna, Austria, supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission 🇪🇺 through the German National Agency "JUGEND für Europa".

This outdoor education training brings together 32 youth workers from Germany 🇩🇪, Austria 🇦🇹, Greece 🇬🇷, Italy 🇮🇹, Poland 🇵🇱, Croatia 🇭🇷, Czechia 🇨🇿, Slovakia 🇸🇰, Hungary 🇭🇺, and Slovenia 🇸🇮.

Our goal is to dive deep into the world of outdoor education, moving from theory to practice 🌲. We aim to equip youth workers with hands-on tools and methodologies to engage young people in environmental learning and sustainable practices through immersive outdoor experiences 🏞️.

on day 1, we focused on introductions 🤝 and examined the core concepts of youth work and key competences 🌱. Participants engaged in discussions about the importance of working with young people and the importance of eight key competences from the youthpass, and how youth can learn them. Those key competences were then linked them to the objectives of the training.

The day ended with a vibrant intercultural night 🌍🎉, where participants shared food, music, and traditions from their home countries, celebrating diversity and building stronger connections.

💡 Stay tuned for more updates from this transformative journey!
