DRI supports local ways of promoting democratic participation and delivers impartial analysis and uses best practice examples to bring international standards of democracy to life. Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is an independent organisation dedicated to promoting democracy worldwide. We believe that people are active participants in public life, not subjects of their governments. For this, we are guided by the democratic and human rights obligations enshrined in international law. Headquartered in Berlin, DRI has offices in Lebanon, Libya, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and Ukraine. Comments will be moderated, and racist, offensive or abusive comments deleted.

📣 MEET LYNNE! She’s an anti-corruption lawyer who was part of the first cohort of STARLIGHT 2.0 ⭐ , a programme that equips legal professionals with knowledge, skills, and connections to use the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights effectively in strategic litigation for systemic impact and better protection of rights.   

For the past 2 years, **Lynne Satariano** has worked with the **The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation** in Malta, focusing on anti-corruption research and advocacy. She’s helped pursue interventions in major international tribunals and supported law enforcement in corruption-related cases.

ALL SELECTED PARTICIPANTS will receive scholarships covering: TRAINING FEES, ACCOMMODATION 🏘️ and MEALS 🥗 during the two in-person workshops in Berlin.

We have a unique opportunity to strengthen rule of law safeguards in the EU.

How? By reforming budget conditionality in the negotiations for the EU’s next long-term budget.

The current conditionality mechanism has already helped drive meaningful legislative reforms on judicial independence and anti-corruption in countries like Hungary and Poland. Yet enforcement has not always been consistent or strong enough.

How can we improve it?

Dr Jacquelyn Veraldli worked with us to analyse the current system and set out recommendations for a stronger conditionality mechanism. Watch the video explainer.

Marta Llonch Valsells works as a lawyer Gentium, specialising in migration and criminal law. She pursues strategic litigation to protect the rights of vulnerable groups and monitors human rights violations in border contexts.

Donald Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to overturn a red card issued by a referee during a match.

And FIFA complied! They broke their own rules to please the U.S. president.

In authoritarian states, this has a name: telephone justice. It’s more about the phone call than the law.

This episode is a reminder of why democracies need neutral institutions. They shield people against arbitrary decisions and guarantee that the rules apply equally to everyone.

Football works because every team plays by the same rules. Democracy works the same way.

When it comes to online moderation, we often can’t see the forest for the trees🌲

It’s easy to end up lost in grey zones, red lines, and edge cases.

But what if some digital policy solutions were just straightforward?

META was grappling with the decision to keep or remove an AI-generated video of then-candidate Péter Magyar that sat between satire and information manipulation.

🤔 A hard choice. And META’s Oversight Board opened a consultation.

Our suggestion? Just label it 🏷️

While labelling presents its own dilemmas, it provides users with proper context, helping them engage more critically with what they see on social media. It’s also what EU guidelines recommend as good practice.
