Street Unit Berlin meets Tagestreff Unterschlupf

Interesse mitzuhelfen? Schreibt uns gerne an [email protected]

Project Class in the Street
Street Unit Berlin meets Unterschlupf e.V.
Our small Street Unit in Berlin, offering creative educational spaces for FLINTA* people experiencing homelessness, continues its journey.
After successfully launching our DIY mobile cinema this Sunday, we are now planning to screen monthly films around the theme of housing and life in public space. We warmly welcome suggestions for locations!
In addition, our participants are actively working at the day center “Unterschlupf”: we are creating linocut prints, writing letters to politicians, and exchanging ideas about the key questions that shape our everyday lives.
We are also very happy to be part of the neighborhood festival at Unterschlupf on 26 June, where we will contribute with creative actions and activities.
Interested in supporting or joining? Feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Frankreich, 1985.

The first international internship of “Class in the Street” in Berlin has just come to an end, and we would like to share some first impressions.

Delegates from the Class in the Street teams from Brindisi, Granada, and Berlin came together for five days in Berlin. During our first encounter, we exchanged about the personal journeys that led us to this project and reflected on the values we share in our approaches.

In the following days, we split into smaller groups. While one group got to know the incredible and prepared posters together with the women there for the vigil against homelessness, another group collected resources on homelessness across Europe. The group also discovered the work of and took part in a guided tour led by Miriam from . We learned more about the struggles surrounding Habersaathstraße as a place reclaimed for people without housing, the possibilities of “Teepeeland,” and the daily challenges that people without homes face in Berlin.

The highlight of our international encounter was our participation in the “Vigil Against Homelessness and Expulsions”.

In our small “Palace of Ideas,” people were able to design postcards using lino prints, write messages of solidarity to those affected by the housing crisis, and write pressure letters to politicians. We also inaugurated the “Mobile Home Cinema,” where we screened interviews created within Class in the Street. Most importantly, we witnessed the powerful work of activists and social initiatives, as well as the strength of people experiencing homelessness in the face of severe discrimination. UFO (Union for Homeless People) is one such initiative, where people without homes can speak for themselves, express their demands directly and organize politically.

On the final day, we presented the film “Haus Nummer Null” by Lilith Kugler at the Zuhause Kiosk as part of the Housing Action Days.

Despite the cold, our small mobile cinema did not fail us, and we are looking forward to bring our mobile structures into action in the coming months.

The next internship is in front of us: our teams will now meet in Brindisi!

Some of the most beautiful moments of the carnival unfold before the parade itself. Here we see the collaborative process slowly emerging between people who don’t know each other...what are the values we share, which vision we want to carry together, where can we complement each other…

Step by step, we build a web of relationships: fragile at first, sometimes messy and challenging, always evolving. It’s not always to work in group, to navigate the compromisses and find the consenses. It takes time, but it is in this process that our practice becomes an exercice to build better society: the care for each other, the acceptance or way to deal with divergences, the reactions in front of the unexpected...

During our Karneval Kampus, our doors were open to anyone curious to join the preparations. Together with guests from En chantier (Marseille), Pimpolhos de Grande Rio (Rio de Janeiro), and Fes (Granada), we built what can be called a community of action. Identity and belonging mattered here less than collective commitment: our shared desire to bring the values of carnival to life through tangible acts.
In a community of action, collaboration replaces competition. Trust and curiosity become the engines of creativity. Partipants find strength not in standing out, but in working toward a common purpose. Everyone has something to contribute, and every gesture, no matter how small, becomes part of a larger movement for change.

We shared creative techniques, meals, and small dreams. These moments of connection gave us a happiness that cannot be monetized or commodified. They are small resistance, which we hope can grow and multiply beyond borders.

“...In a daily life so often consumed by screens, spaces like this one breathe new life into our imagination and our ability to dream together.
And I loved the spirit of trust that prevailed throughout all the preparations: never the question ‘Do you know how to do that?’ but rather ‘Do you want to try?’ It’s rare and so precious in a world where we constantly have to justify ourselves and showcase our skills and abilities...”

Who’s street? Our streets!

No racist politicians will scare us from reclaiming public space in all our diversity!

We all belong here, and we are beautiful in all our differences.

There is no better "Stadtbild" than a colorful crowd of old Berliners, new Berliners, guests, neighbors, and travelers filling the grey asphalt and sharing moments of joy together.

One of the goals of the carnival is to open space for those who are usually excluded or/and don’t feel legitimate enough to take over the streets. This year, we worked together with different shelters to bring children living in marginalized situations to be part of the carnival. They built puppets, costumes, and flags...and with great joy, they joined the procession despite the rain. It was probably their first time walking in the middle of the road, feeling that the city belongs to them, that they belong here, among everyone else.

We want more of this, and we will not let anybody (not even white men in power) tell us who is welcome in the streets and who is not.

We believe in performativity: through our way of being in the world, we create reality. By our active presence in public space, we are already changing it. Carnival is a way to open a space for trying out our desired ways of being in the world.
Our reality is a beautiful, colorful chaos and we will never stop beeing part of the Stadtbild.
