Connecting societies worldwide to advance immunological science, education, and advocacy

There are currently 73 Member Societies of IUIS, which belong to one of four Regional Federations encompassing Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia-Oceania or are direct members such as US and Canada. Links with other international scientific bodies are promoted through the International Affiliate Members of IUIS, membership of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and formal liaison with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The FIMSA Junior Community just held its first meeting, becoming the third regional early- and mid-career network under the IUIS Junior Community, after yEFIS and ALACI 👏 Chaired by FIMSA president Prof. Osamu Takeuchi (Kyoto University, Japan), the meeting brought together national representatives from India, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong, and China, alongside IUIS Junior Community Chair Dr. Anne Hahn, plus peers from yEFIS and ALACI who came to share what they'd learned building their own networks first.

That's the pattern behind all three regional networks so far: early career researchers showing up for each other, then handing that experience forward to the next region. Dr. Srikanth Sadhu (THSTI, India) and Dr. Misagh Rajabinejad (University of Tehran, Iran) will lead the FIMSA Junior Community through its first year.

Age-associated B cells, or ABCs, can predict who will respond poorly to a vaccine, including cancer patients on checkpoint blockade therapy. Defining this population consistently, across labs and studies, is exactly the challenge IUIS's B and Plasma Cell Nomenclature Sub-Committee exists to address.

With the UN80 reform process underway and a post-2030 development agenda taking shape, the International Science Council is using the transition to a new UN Secretary-General to make a specific case: science should be a permanent pillar of global governance, not a resource summoned only in emergencies.

In an open letter on behalf of 250 member organizations, the ISC lays out three asks: institutionalized mechanisms that get scientific knowledge to policymakers systematically rather than ad hoc, a stronger role for the social sciences in understanding how new technologies reshape societies, and equitable access to scientific knowledge for low- and middle-income countries.

IUIS supports the letter. IUIS has stood with the ISC since 1976 in supporting science, scientific freedom, integrity, and international cooperation.

The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) has condemned continued efforts to target Anthony Fauci, MD, a physician-scientist whose five-decade career included central contributions to the understanding and treatment of HIV/AIDS and influenza, and whose leadership helped guide the vaccines that brought the world through the acute phase of COVID-19.

Attacks on individual scientists erode public trust in evidence, discourage the next generation from entering research, and leave health systems less prepared for the crisis after this one. IUIS Past President Miriam Merad has already named the stakes: "This is not simply a U.S. issue. It is a global crisis. That's why we must act, with urgency and clarity, to reclaim the narrative and remind the public what science makes possible."

IUIS stands behind AAI and every member society defending scientists' ability to follow evidence and communicate it honestly.

CCR8 is the receptor several cancer immunotherapies now target on tumor-infiltrating regulatory T cells. IUIS's CD Nomenclature Sub-Committee only just gave it a formal number, CD198, at the most recent HLDA workshop. It's one of 13 GPCR receptors named in that single workshop, a category that has long lagged behind in having well-validated antibodies.

The Else Kröner Fresenius Prize for Medical Research 2027 is open for nominations, and this cycle it's focused on cell-based immunotherapies, covering ex vivo and in vivo engineering of immune cells for both malignant and non-malignant disease. The prize is worth €2.5 million: €500,000 goes directly to the winner, and €2 million is dedicated to their future research.

Nominees have to be put forward by heads of research institutes or professional organizations, not self-nominated, and younger and mid-career scientists are favored.
