🌍 HEYO: Healthy and Empowered Youth for Healthy, Productive and Resilient Communities

How can young people become active agents of change in their communities?
Our HEYO project brings together health, education and opportunities for young people, particularly teenage mothers and young girls, in northern Uganda.

But what exactly is behind it all? 👀

Uganda is one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting countries, while many young people continue to face barriers to education, employment and healthcare.
In the northern districts of Terego and Moyo, these challenges are particularly visible. This is where our HEYO project comes in.

Together with our local partners Cordaid Uganda and SRHR Alliance Uganda, we are working to strengthen young people’s health, education, economic opportunities, and psychosocial wellbeing. 🤝

After our successful work in Karongi, we’re taking the next step in Rwanda. 🇷🇼💚

Our largest and most recent project in the country, running from 2025 to 2028, brings the approach developed in Karongi to a new region: Rubavu.

By combining improved access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services with community engagement, we’re working to create lasting opportunities for vulnerable women and young people.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES AND BUILDING FUTURES IN RWANDA 🇷🇼

➡️ Through our partner Gesundes Afrika e.V., in collaboration with local organisations WE-ACTx For Hope and For Africa Rwanda, 112 young women in Rwanda have strengthened their skills, built businesses and created new economic opportunities.

➡️ From entrepreneurship training and savings groups to mentoring and start-up support, the project focuses on one thing: enabling women facing economic and social barriers to take charge of their own futures.

➡️ The results are inspiring: nine Village Savings and Loan Associations continue to operate, women are growing their businesses, increasing their incomes and supporting each other through strong community networks.

🌍 This is what sustainable community development looks like: local partnerships, shared knowledge and women shaping their own paths.

More than 30 years have passed since the genocide in Rwanda. Since then, the country has achieved remarkable progress and is considered a model for economic recovery, with major successes in infrastructure and education. 🌍📈

And yet, even after such a long time, the impact of the genocide can still be felt. Vulnerable young women, in particular, continue to face existential challenges due to health limitations, early motherhood, or a lack of schooling.

🇸🇴 In the Afgooye Corridor, one of Somalia's most vulnerable regions, prolonged drought, ongoing conflict, and displacement continue to put families at risk.

The project was funded by Sternstunden e.V. and designed to respond to these urgent needs by improving the health of malnourished children while strengthening food security for their families. Alongside emergency food assistance, our goal was to support vulnerable households in an increasingly challenging humanitarian context.

What comes after a successful pilot project? 🌊
For us, it meant building on what worked. 🤝

Following the pilot phase of our Fishing Project, we continued working alongside local communities in Hobyo to further strengthen the fishing sector and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Completed in March 2024, the project's second phase focused on expanding its impact by supporting women and young people through practical training and promoting economic independence.

We continue to invest in local capacities rather than short-term solutions. 🌱

For many communities in Somalia, repeated droughts and the effects of climate change have meant years of dependence on externally provided humanitarian assistance.

At the same time, the country's coastline offers an often-overlooked opportunity: strengthening local fisheries to improve food security, create livelihoods, and build more resilient communities.

This carousel looks back at the pilot phase of our Hobyo Fishing Project, which ran from February to September 2023. The project focused on supporting vulnerable fishing communities, particularly women and young people in Hobyo, Galmudug.
