Challenging conventional perceptions of hockey, Dr. Martin Hyun became the first German player of Korean heritage to compete in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), Germany's top professional ice hockey league. As the son of South Korean guest workers, Hyun grew up in Germany navigating questions of identity, belonging, and equal opportunity. These experiences shaped his commitment to creating spaces where people from all backgrounds feel welcomed, valued, and represented. Throughout his playing career, Hyun experienced firsthand how hockey can transcend sport. Hockey has the power to bring people together, build friendships across cultures, and create opportunities for young people who may otherwise feel excluded. These experiences inspired the creation of Hockey is Diversity in 2010. Today, Hockey is Diversity (HiD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities in hockey and beyond. Through education, community engagement, youth development programs, hospital visits, equipment support initiatives, and partnerships across the hockey world, HiD works to make the sport more accessible and welcoming for everyone. We believe hockey should reflect the diversity of the communities in which it is played. Our mission is to broaden participation among players, coaches, officials, volunteers, and fans, ensuring that people of all backgrounds can see themselves represented in the game. Using hockey as a platform for dialogue and social impact, we strive to create a sport where everyone belongs.
