The EU’s Act is designed to promote the trustworthy use of artificial intelligence while protecting fundamental rights and strengthening the Single Market. As AI systems increasingly shape public discourse and decision-making, effective oversight has become a key challenge for policymakers across Europe. The German implementation faces the task of balancing effective market surveillance, federal structures, and innovation policy.

In the latest , Victor Monsees and Carolin Fuß examine Germany’s approach to implementing the AI Act and identify the key factors for achieving a balance between central oversight and federal autonomy while simultaneously fostering innovation.

📍 We are hosting the second RESILIO-ACCESS Civil Society Forum in Ohrid, bringing together civil society representatives, researchers, and experts from EU candidate countries.

The forum focuses on presenting findings and empirical evidence on the resilience of the rule of law, while also advancing the development of the RESILIO-ACCESS model and monitoring framework. Through presentations and roundtable discussions, participants will exchange experiences and explore challenges and opportunities for strengthening democratic resilience across the region.

🤝As part of the EU’s RESILIO-ACCESS project, the forum supports ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law, democratic resilience, and the EU integration process in candidate countries.

Berlin setzt wichtige Impulse für die europäische Integration der Ukraine: Der Vorschlag einer assoziierten EU-Mitgliedschaft unterstreicht die Schlüsselrolle Deutschlands als militärischer, finanzieller und reformpolitischer Unterstützer und Vermittler im EU-Beitrittsprozess der Ukraine. 🇪🇺🇺🇦

Das gemeinsame Policy Paper von Громадянська мережа ОПОРА und dem IEP zeichnet die Entwicklung der deutsch-ukrainischen Beziehungen mit Fokus auf die EU-Annäherung der Ukraine nach und analysiert, wie Strategien und Interessen beider Länder den Integrationsprozess prägen.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen Rollenverständnisse, gegenseitige Erwartungen sowie zentrale Herausforderungen bei der strategischen Planung und Umsetzung von Reformen – insbesondere im Bereich und Grundwerte.

Heute vor 41 Jahren, am 14. Juni 1985, beschlossen die Staats- und Regierungschefs der Beneluxländer, Deutschlands und Frankreichs das Schengener Übereinkommen zum Abbau von Kontrollen an den Binnengrenzen. 1990 folgte das Durchführungsübereinkommen, das 1995 in Kraft trat. Heute gehören dem Schengen-Raum 25 der 27 EU-Mitgliedstaaten an sowie Island, Liechtenstein, Norwegen und die Schweiz.

Der Schengen-Raum gilt bis heute als eine der bedeutendsten Errungenschaften der europäischen Integration: Offene Binnengrenzen ermöglichen Millionen Menschen das freie Reisen, Arbeiten und Leben innerhalb Europas.

Gleichzeitig steht zunehmend unter Druck. Stationäre Kontrollen an EU-Binnengrenzen bestehen teilweise seit Jahren, während auch die Situation an den Außengrenzen kontrovers diskutiert wird. Damit stellt sich immer wieder die Frage, wie belastbar das Schengen-System langfristig ist.

🇭🇺 Hungary’s regime change reshapes European politics. 🇪🇺 The new government could strengthen regional cooperation in Central Europe, unblock Hungary’s role in EU enlargement policy, and create conditions for the gradual release of frozen EU funds.

🇪🇺 How can closer cooperation help Europe respond to growing geopolitical challenges?
These questions were at the centre of today’s at the European House in Berlin, jointly organised by the Institut für Europäische Politik e.V. and Embassy of Sweden in Germany (Schwedische Botschaft).

We were pleased to welcome Christian Danielsson (Swedish State Secretary for European Affairs), Michael Clauß (Head of the European Policy Division, Federal Chancellery Germany Bundeskanzleramt) and Minna Kivimäki (Finnish State Secretary for EU Affairs) for a discussion on strengthening cooperation within the EU and NATO, supporting Ukraine, enhancing European resilience, and improving the EU’s capacity to act.

A special thank you to Dr Barbara Gessler, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Germany (Europäische Kommission – Vertretung in Deutschland) for her welcoming remarks and IEP Director Prof. Dr Funda Tekin for moderating this timely exchange.
