🇪🇺 What makes the rule of law resilient in EU enlargement countries?
With its pre-enlargement policy reviews published last week, the European Commission has proposed new safeguards to address the risk of democratic and rule of law backsliding after EU accession. This raises a broader question: How can rule of law resilience be strengthened and sustained throughout the accession process and beyond?
We are pleased to launch the RESILIO-ACCESS Country Reports, offering in-depth analyses of rule of law resilience across nine EU enlargement countries. Going beyond assessments of reform progress, the reports examine the resources that strengthen resilience, the pressures that undermine it, and the role of EU integration in shaping these dynamics. By combining quantitative findings with qualitative country-level analysis, they shed light on the political, historical and institutional contexts that shape rule of law resilience across the enlargement region.
