borderline europe - Menschenrechte ohne Grenzen e.V.

***
Pushbacks at Europe's external borders are already common practice.

Fleeing people are facing inhuman treatment at the European borders everyday.
Including forced departures, torture, and in some cases even death.

Now the European Council is debating suspending the European right to seek asylum in "specific cases".

Building their legal ground for the ongoing human rights violations.

As part of the Festival Letterature Migranti , we are presenting the exhibition VOICES FROM THE BORDER at Goethe-Institut Palermo.

VOICES FROM THE BORDER is a series of fifteen short film portraits documenting the stories of people stranded at Europe's external borders, as well as the voices of those living in these border regions.

Filmed in Serbia, Mauritania, Tunisia, Morocco, Bosnia and Turkey, the portraits were created by residential filmmakers as well as former refugees who retraced the routes they once travelled themselves.

By shifting perspective, VOICES FROM THE BORDER invites us to see Europe's borders not from within, but through the eyes of those standing outside them.

📍TBA 🗓️25 October 2026
The day after the national protest in , we will gather for another assembly.

Thirty-seven years ago, this region was the birthplace of the country’s first major anti-racist movement: Jerry Masslo’s death brought hundreds of thousands of people into the streets and forced the government to eliminate the discrimination in asylum policies that had previously limited asylum only to those who had been persecuted in Europe.

Also in these areas, in 2008, six young Africans were killed by the Casalesi Clan, and hundreds of migrants blocked the Domiziana highway to demand justice. Then in 2011, in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, something was tested that some would like to repeat now: young Tunisians were confined to a tent city that had been transformed into a CIE (former detention center) by decree.

Today, the Meloni government wants to extend the CPR (detention centres) system to many regions, while at the same time the European Pact on Migration and Asylum is increasing the number of containment policies: The centers in remain a testing ground for a model that other states want to replicate. Those who oppose it are criminalized.

This land bears in its history the violence of racism, exploitation, and detention, but also the strength of those who opposed it and secured justice, rights,
and the closure of detention centers.

‼️That is why we cannot accept the establishment of a new CPR - another state-run detention center- here. Neither in Castelvolturno nor anywhere else.

📢Come, get involved, make your voice heard. It’s up to us to fight to ensure that this land remains a place of remembrance, solidarity, and freedom, not of confinement.
Details on the workshops and the location will be posted online soon - stay tuned!

The event is open to all collectives, associations, networks, legal professionals, healthcare workers, unions, movements, and anyone who wants to promote the abolition of administrative detention, freedom of movement, and the self-determination of all the people.

JEDER TAG IST DER 3. OKTOBER:

EVERYDAY IT’S OCTOBER 3RD:
On Saturday, organized a commemoration for the victims of the shipwreck off the coast of 13 years ago and all the other victims of Europe’s restrictive migration politics.

People from different organizations spoke about their experiences of coming to Italy across the Mediterranean and of living here now. Surviving the crossing is not the end of their suffering. In Europe, they still face a system of racism and exploitation.

During the commemoration, they displayed a list of people who died coming to , alongside self-made paper ships and banners with messages calling to stop letting people die.

We remember those who died on their way, and those who died after making it here.

On 3 October 2013, a boat carrying 368 People on the Move sank off the coast of Lampedusa. Just a few days later, another boat capsized between Italy and Libya. 268 people died.

Today, we wish to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in the Mediterranean.

Numerous people continue to die whilst fleeing across the Mediterranean. Restrictive EU policies hinder safe escape routes and continue to force people onto dangerous routes.

In the first eight months of 2026 alone, borderline-europe recorded a total of 1,440 deaths and missing persons in the Mediterranean.

Since early 2026, Italy's government has pushed forward anti-immigration measures — despite President Mattarella blocking parts of the original "security package" as unconstitutional.

However, a security decree with highly restrictive measures was converted into law in April. The draft law on the naval blockade has been assigned to the Constitutional Affairs Committee in the Senate, where it still remains.

At the same time implementation was meant to go through a draft law but the government shifted it into an emergency decree-law, making use of EU measures to restrict migration.

This isn't just policy — it's political theatre ahead of 2027 , built on security rhetoric while real lives are put at risk at sea and in detention.
