“How do you usually verify migration-related information in your work?”
At the start of Day 3, participants were asked.

Most responses highlighted traditional approaches such as consulting the Ghana Immigration Service, IOM, official websites, local authorities and other credible institutions.

After a full day of practical learning, participants reflected on a second question:

"What new tool or concrete step will you now add to your verification process for migration stories?"

The responses showed clear growth. Participants committed to:
✔️ Applying the two-source rule before publication
✔️ Verifying the credibility of online accounts and digital content
✔️ Cross-checking information with trusted institutions and databases

Accurate migration reporting begins with verifying the facts.

On Day 3 of the Media Training, participants strengthened their verification skills by exploring:

✅ Identifying misinformation, disinformation and malinformation
✅ Applying the 5Ws and H and the two-source rule
✅ Using digital verification tools such as Google Lens, TinEye, InVID-WeVerify and Yandex Images
✅ Assessing the credibility of online sources and social media content
✅ Applying Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) to migration reporting

Through practical exercises, participants verified images, assessed online content and explored how fact-checking helps promote accurate, credible and evidence-based journalism.

Day 2 of MMAct Media Reporting Workshop in Ghana Learning Highlights | Ethical Migration Reporting

Responsible migration reporting starts with ethics!!

On Day 2 of the Media Training, participants strengthened their skills in:

✅ Using accurate and respectful migration terminology such as; Irregular migrant, Returnee or Returned migrant.
✅ Protecting the dignity and privacy of migrants
✅ Applying informed consent and ethical reporting principles
✅ Producing balanced, human-centred migration stories

Through practical exercises and discussions, participants reflected on how ethical journalism can promote informed public dialogue and responsible migration reporting.

We kicked off our Media Training on July 4th at the FIFA Goal Project in The Gambia.

It was great to see journalists, community members, and regional coordinators in one room, learning together.

The goal: to strengthen media capacity on migration reporting in The Gambia.
From fact-checking to ethical storytelling, we are working with journalists to add to their skills so the public gets verified, responsible information.

FROM PERCEPTION TO UNDERSTANDING
Participants were assessed alongside training.

Participants were asked "How would you describe your understanding of the current governance of migration in your region?"

Below were some thoughts shared by participants;
"Migration is the movement of people from one place to another, but the process is unknown to me."
"The Ghana Immigration Service leads migration control efforts, but people do not know what migration governance issues or efforts exist in their region."
"Migration is moving from one place to another, but with the current governance I know nothing about it.”

At the end of the session, they reflected again by answering:
"How would you now describe the role that migration governance should play in your reporting processes?"

Some responses;
"Migration governance should guide reporting through laws, policies, accountability, and protective journalism."
"Journalists must be mindful of their choice of words when reporting migration issues."
"It will change our perception and the way we use migration terminologies in our reporting."

Their responses showed how the training broadened their understanding of migration governance.

The first day of the MMAct Media Training introduced media practitioners to Migration Governance; the laws, policies, institutions, and ethical principles that shape migration in Ghana.

Participants explored key topics including:

Migration governance in Ghana
Migration laws and policies
The roles of key migration institutions
Human rights and migration
Responsible migration terminology
The media's role in promoting accurate and balanced migration reporting.

The training was highly interactive.

Participants worked in groups to analyze real-life migration scenarios, identify the correct migration categories, review media headlines for bias and sensationalism, and map reliable institutions for verifying migration stories.

Through these practical exercises, participants strengthened their ability to report migration issues ethically, accurately, and based on verified information.
