Invitation to an Open Day at a new civic & cultural venue in Jaramana, Damascus

📍 Shared Space Centre, Jaramana (Kornish Al-Janayen, near Qasr Al-Amira, Taimour Mini Market, 50 meters ahead).

The Little Syria is a civic and community-based initiative that supports the formation of independent professional collectives led by young women and men. The project works to strengthen participatory governance, encourage new forms of civic organisation and collective action, and build local structures that can directly serve the community. It is grounded in a simple idea: rebuilding society begins by strengthening local networks, creating safe spaces for learning and exchange, and supporting initiatives that grow from within the community itself.

Shared Space Centre is an independent civic, cultural, community, and development centre in Jaramana. It was created as a safe and open space for young people and the local community, a place for gathering, learning, exchange, and collective work.

Programme highlights:
• Welcome and guided tour of the centre
• Opening of a painting and sculpture exhibition
• Introduction to Masaha Center and The Little Syria project
• Panel discussion: Civil spaces, why they matter and how they can be activated
• Coffee break and open networking
•Short dance performance: Attempts – Even if Only an Echo
• Theatrical readings: A Very Ordinary Day
• Live informal music throughout the day
Collective music session in the evening

The exhibition will continue until Thursday, 25 June 2026, daily from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

This project is designed by artist Khaled Barakeh, organised & supervised by coculture in Germany, and implemented in partnership with the وحدة تمكين المجتمع المدني CSE Unit (Civil Society Empowerment Unit) in Syria. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with support from GIZ.

Repeating a Lie Doesn’t Make it True تكرار الكذبة لا يجعلها حقيقة

Ocupied Stage is a performance art festival that reclaims the stage as a site of evidence, critical inquiry, and collective truth-telling. Taking place in Berlin, a city shaped by division, surveillance, and unresolved histories, the festival approaches performance as both commemoration and confrontation. It positions the stage as an occupied terrain where narratives are contested, silenced voices re-emerge, and truth is articulated in real time.

Against silencing, propaganda, and the weaponisation of memory, Occupied Stage asserts performance as counter-performance: a cultural practice that refuses erasure and challenges enforced neutrality. The festival brings together artists working across performance, music, dance, theatre, sound, and interdisciplinary practices whose work engages with questions of power, displacement, censorship, and social responsibility.

Rooted in Berlin’s paradoxical landscape, a city that carefully curates remembrance while increasingly restricting present-day dissent, Occupied Stage insists on accountability in the present tense. It foregrounds artistic practices that function as testimony, examining how violence is normalised, histories are rewritten, and non-violent forms of political expression are delegitimised through dominant narratives. The festival prioritises voices from migrant and diasporic communities, particularly artists whose lived experiences are often marginalised within mainstream cultural institutions.

Occupied Stage is a temporary occupation of cultural space where performance becomes a method of witnessing, critical presence, and imagining alternative futures grounded in dignity and ethical responsibility.

As the U.S.–Israeli war on Iran escalates, the battle over narrative accelerates with it: repetition as strategy, distortion as policy, and “acceptable speech” enforced through pressure rather than debate.

Francesca Albanese, international lawyer and UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, joins Occupied Stage for a conversation on The Politics of the Lie: narrative warfare, legal responsibility, and what accountability can still mean when the messenger becomes the target.

يدعو المشروع المهنيين/ات في جرمانا إلى الانضمام إلى مسار عملي يهدف إلى بناء تجمعات مهنية تعمل بشكل جماعي ومنظّم، وتنتقل من المبادرات الفردية إلى أشكال أكثر استدامة من العمل المشترك.

OCCUPIED STAGE is a three-day performance art festival reclaiming the stage as a space of evidence, defiance, & collective truth-telling. Against propaganda, censorship, & the weaponisation of memory, we assert performance as counter-performance.
We reject neutrality. We demand accountability in the present tense.
المسرح المُحتل
“تكرار الكذبة لن يجعلها حقيقة”
“المسرح المُحتل” هو مهرجان فنون أدائية يمتدّ لثلاثة أيام، يُعيد فيه الفنانون استخدام المنصة كمساحة للتعبير عن الحقيقة والمقاومة والتضامن بصوتٍ جماعي. نؤكد على فن الأداء كأداء مضاد في مواجهة الدعاية والرقابة وتوظيف الذاكرة كسلاح.
نرفض الحياد. ونُطالب بالمحاسبة في زمن الحاضر.

📣 We’re Looking For
Artists working across all forms of performance (live art, music, sound, theatre, dance, participatory acts, workshops, ritual-based performances, street interventions, among others). Priority will be given to migrants/diasporic background artists, particularly those who arrived after 2015. We’re looking for proposals that engage with the festival’s themes of resistance, censorship, & solidarity.

فنانين يعملن في مختلف أشكال الفنون الأدائية (الفن الحي، الموسيقى، الصوت، المسرح، الرقص، الأعمال التشاركية، الورش، الأداءات الطقسية، التدخلات في الفضاء العام، وغيرها). الأولوية للفنانين/ات من خلفيات مهاجرة أو من الشتات، خصوصاً الذين وصلوا إلى برلين بعد عام ٢٠١٥. نبحث عن مقترحات تتفاعل مع موضوع المهرجان: المقاومة، الرقابة، والتضامن.
