At a meeting of EU home affairs ministers yesterday, discussions will focus on discriminatory regulations and the further isolation of the EU. The aim is to make it possible to suspend the right to asylum and to deport people from return hubs without individual proceedings.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, speaking in relation to and without regard for human rights, stated that it is Europeans alone and not “smugglers and human traffickers” who decide who enters the EU.

In reality, the pays and trains those who decide the fate of people fleeing their homes, those who blackmail them, hold them captive or, through corruption, make the journey across the Mediterranean possible.

MV Louise Michel is looking for a Captain to join our crew for the upcoming rotation in the Central Mediterranean.

📅 Rotation: 28 October – 2 December
📍 Embarking in Sicily // Central Mediterranean

What we need:

• CoC 500–3000 GT or above, unlimited (STCW II/2)
• Solid seamanship, calm under pressure, and a commitment to solidarity at sea

Germany’s racist and inhumane policy of deterrence, tolerated by the , is an attack on human rights.
It mocks the right to asylum and the Geneva Refugee Convention, which were established in response to N**i Germany’s dictatorship, the Second World War, and the refugee movements connected to it.

This clearly disproportionate violation of the principle of freedom of movement is deeply cynical.

We demand the immediate end of Germany’s border controls.
Freedom of movement for everyone, now!

More than 7.7 million people have left in recent years, making it one of the largest displacement crises on the planet, alongside and .

Most aren’t resettled in wealthy nations, they’re hosted by neighbouring Latin American countries already under significant strain. It rarely dominates international headlines the way other crises do.

Louise Michel exists to support all people on the move, not just those fleeing countries under international spotlight.

Not every boat intercepted in the Central Mediterranean reaches safety.
Many are returned to by a so called coast guard that receives training and funding connected to European institutions, even despite well-documented reports of corruption, torture, extortion, and sexual violence inside Libyan detention facilities.

Earlier this year, an individual wanted by the for torture in Libya was finally sentenced, though only on a fraction of the charges.

This is the reality search-and-rescue organisations like Louise Michel are working against: the difference between a rescue and an interception can be the difference between safety and a documented pattern of abuse.

54 people, including 3 children, embarked the Louise Michel yesterday evening.

Our crew found an overcrowded, unseaworthy metal boat in distress. The people on it had no life-saving equipment and insufficient fuel and food.

Following first aid and the distribution of basics like food and blankets, the Louise Michel is now en route to its designated port of safety, Valentia.

No one should have to put themselves in danger in their search for a self-determined life. Freedom of movement for all!

The scLCG is being established and supported by the EU with ships, equipment, training, and surveillance technology. It has also received European funds totaling over 100 million euros.

Under the principle of non-refoulement, European authorities, including , are prohibited from returning poeple on the move intercepted at sea to a country where they face torture, such as . As a loophole in international law, the European Commission has therefore funded the establishment of a so called Libyan coast guard and equipped it to patrol the Libyan zone.

In addition to threats, both armed and unarmed, corruption, and interceptions (i.e., illegal pullbacks), several NGO ships have also been shot at over the past 12 months.

The is thus funding a cycle of violence and corruption.

Man-made climate change, which drives people into famine, water scarcity and poverty through droughts, threatens them not only in their home countries but also on the move.
  is already reshaping migration routes, and making them deadlier. Over half of the deaths recorded on the Central route so far in 2026 happened in a single month, January, when Cyclone Harry struck the region. This isn’t a future risk. It’s already here, and it’s already killing people mid-crossing. Louise Michel is on the water responding to exactly this.

Everyone safely disembarked in Crotone

All 42 people on board the Louise Michel from the latest rescue operation have safely disembarked in Crotone, Italy.
We wish everyone the very best for the rest of their journey.

During disembarkation, the Italian authorities asked the usual questions. Yet the fact that EU-funded Libyan militias had fired in the direction of the Louise Michel was of no interest to them.

This cannot be normal.

We call on and the to stop funding the so-called Libyan Coast Guard and to establish safe and legal escape routes for people seeking safety. No one should have to risk their life at sea to find protection.

Since the Louise started her work in 2020, 10,495 people on the move have been recorded as missing in the Central Mediterranean alone.

Our hope that would stand up for its own foundations, its core values of human rights and freedom for all, has still not been realised.

While the reasons for fleeing, such as droughts caused by man-made climate change, poverty, and war, are increasing, the is not taking political responsibility for its own complicity in these problems but continues to seal itself off.

Exactly six years ago, our crew completed their first rotation and were able to assist 300 people in distress at sea.

We are still at sea today; rather than the reasons for our work being resolved through political measures, both people on the move and we ourselves are being threatened by EU-funded militias, which is making our work immensely difficult.
