Two original sections of the Berlin Wall were folded into a “table,” transforming history’s barrier into a space for connection. On November 9th, the anniversary of the Wall’s fall, Dr. Jylana Sheats joined an intercultural dialogue at the Wall to Table exhibition while attending the 2025 Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin, Germany. Jylana notes that “standing on the Berlin Wall — once a symbol of division, now reshaped into a table for dialogue, was a moment to reflect on how science and conversation can help build bridges across communities and across the world.”

🌱 Meet Adrianna, Helena, and Suzi from Team 8!

For their OFIS Science Engagement Project, this team combined environmental science with community outreach to promote equal access to recycling education and inspire sustainable habits among youth. After noticing that many students lacked basic recycling knowledge—leading to contamination in local recycling streams—they took action.

They partnered with Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) to install a new recycling bin in their community and designed clear, engaging infographics to teach proper recycling practices. To expand their impact, they launched an Instagram account, , where they share NY-specific recycling tips and visuals to help others make informed, sustainable choices.

Their project shows how science and local action can work hand in hand to build a greener future. 🌍💬

Meet Sophia and Lana from Team 7! ⚙️

For their OFIS Science Engagement Project, they set out to address the income-education gap by creating accessible, hands-on STEM experiences for low-income students in their home state of California. Guided by the question: “How does STEM education help bridge the income-education gap and impact the academic interest, self-efficacy, and career aspirations of elementary students from low-income backgrounds?”—they organized a STEM fair and classroom demonstrations using fun, cost-effective experiments.

Their event reached nearly 200 students, parents, and teachers—sparking curiosity, critical thinking, and early career exploration. Feedback from educators and families was overwhelmingly positive, with students showing renewed excitement and interest in science.

Sophia and Lana’s project shows how accessible, community-based STEM engagement can inspire future changemakers—and how their model can be easily replicated in schools across cities like Los Angeles and beyond. 💡📚

🌞 Meet Shalisa and Faris from Team 6!

For their OFIS Science Engagement Project, they investigated how classroom lighting impacts student well-being at Centennial High School. After students reported headaches, migraines, and eye strain from harsh LED lighting, Shalisa and Faris designed a quasi-experiment: they installed artificial sunlight lamps in windowless classrooms. They collected survey data before and after the lighting change.

To share their findings, they created a powerful documentary exposing how the lack of natural sunlight is affecting students’ mental and physical health—and showing how something as simple as lighting can make a meaningful difference. Their goal? To inform school officials and board of education members and advocate for change in underfunded schools.

Meet Tithi and Sai from Team 5! For their science engagement projects, Tithi and Sai conducted data analysis, interviews, and public health research to highlight systemic discrimination in the New Jersey and Maryland healthcare systems, while advocating for justice by amplifying minority voices and promoting equitable care solutions.

Tithi focused on racial minorities, finding that they face significant health inequities, including higher rates of misdiagnosis, inadequate care, and negative healthcare experiences due to systemic bias. Sai found that there needs to be improvement in the systems in place to help support women and non-binary individuals when they reach out for medical support.

Using the hashtag , they created Instagram campaigns sharing resources and statistics on these inequities and how to deal with discrimination in healthcare.

Meet Adel from Team 3! 🌱📊 Adel’s project connects environmental science and public health to the broader issue of environmental racism in the South Bronx by examining how poor waste management disproportionately affecting marginalized populations contributes to high asthma rates among South Bronx youth. Adel reached out to local residents and business owners, environmental justice organizers, and public health advocates and created a media piece using storytelling, scientific data and actionable steps to advocate for cleaner streets and more equitable waste policies. With over 200 views on Instagram, a growing flyer campaign, and community outreach, he’s helping amplify local voices and push for lasting change. 🗣️📢

Meet Allen from Team 3! Allen is using data-driven research and advocacy to address income-based inequities in education. He found that students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to attend schools with larger budgets, which provide better access to resources such as advanced technology, extracurricular programs, and qualified teachers.

To spread the word about these disparities, Allen wrote an article that he shared to 1056 students and faculty members in his school’s daily email and newspaper. Through his project, Allen advocates for education as a fundamental right, not an income-based privilege. 🗣️📢

Meet John Nguyen from Team 1! John’s taking action against environmental racism in his home state of California, where communities in Carson, Wilmington, and Long Beach face high rates of asthma due to air pollution caused by nearby refineries, ports, and freeways. 🛢️🚛💨 Through interviews with peers and community leaders, John explored how low-cost solutions like DIY air purifiers and simple cleaning habits can help protect marginalized communities from air pollution He even turned his findings into a classroom lesson that he presented to his peers and is working to publish his article to raise awareness nationwide. 🙌🌎

Meet Muhssina & Nyla from Team 4! 🌍 Through their project, 'Just Breathe,' they’re tackling air pollution with a focus on PM2.5, a dangerous pollutant found in NYC and D.C. subway systems. Their research reveals that Black and Hispanic/Latino/a/x communities in urban areas face higher exposure to harmful air quality due to long-standing inequalities and overlooked environmental policies. 🏙️⚠️

To spread awareness, they launched an Instagram page and website dedicated to educating the public on PM2.5 and its disproportionate impact on low-income and POC communities. They strive to consistently update and improve their pages as they continue their research on air pollution. 💨📱

Meet Tyra LaFargue from Team 1! 🥕 For her science engagement project, Tyra tackled food insecurity in her community in Louisiana. She explored how limited access to fresh, healthy food affects low-income families, students, the elderly, and even her own peers. Many neighborhoods lack nearby stores with fresh options, and barriers to transportation make access even harder, leading to poor diets and serious health issues. 🚫🍎 Through data analysis and community outreach, Tyra uncovered how transportation barriers and food deserts contribute to chronic health issues like diabetes and heart disease. She also emphasized the vital role food banks play in bridging the gap by posting flyers to encourage donations to her local food drive 📊❤️
