Sumac Space

Sumac Space Sumac Space launched in October 2020 as a non-profit platform focused on contemporary art from West Asia through online and in-situ programs. (April 2025)

Sumac Space as a non-profit platform navigates sociopolitical themes via exhibitions, dialogues, and collaboration that emphasize critical thinking in art practices. We collaborate with artists, curators, and research bodies that address contemporary urgencies in the context of the region's challenging socio-political circumstances. Alongside our exhibition programs, we invite viewers to explore i

ts digitally accessible Dialogues and Artists’ Rooms, which are the core pillars that shape and define the entirety of Sumac Space. Dialogues are a place for being vocal. Here, authors and artists get together in conversations, interviews, essays, and experimental forms of writing. We aim to create a space of exchange where the published results are often the most visible manifestations of relations, friendships, and collaborations built around Sumac Space. Artists’ Rooms are digital spaces of thoughts by artists, allowing audiences to explore their thinking processes and research beyond the artwork itself, a space for viewing and contemplating relations between different artifacts and subjects. As we progressively build a community of artists, curators, and research bodies gravitating around the region, we welcome diverse voices to actively participate in forming Sumac Space. We propose collaboration and foster a sense of shared and collective ownership, not as mere themes or theoretical concepts but as unconditional ways of working.

Grateful to all who gathered with us for the opening and made it a special evening. For those who could not be there, the exhibition continues until the 26th—open daily from 11–18 (except Sundays). We’ll be glad to welcome you in the space, and perhaps a conversation over a cup of tea. Photos Jana Kiesser

The Semantic Diversity of Material—Nilbar Güreş in Conversation with Sırma Zaimoğlu

Nilbar Güreş, a self-taught artist, discusses her diverse artistic production, influenced by her Kurdish Alevi heritage and experiences in Istanbul. She critiques the commodification of art and the pressure artists face, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself. Güreş’s work, spanning photography, painting, and other mediums, explores themes of gender, feminism, and freedom, often deconstructing societal norms and expectations.

The New Gods is a mixed media artwork series by Egyptian artist Omar Houssien. Here the ancient deities of Egypt are reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary society, culture, and symbology. We see the god of disorder, Seth, as an Arab Spring protester, the goddess of joy and femininity, Hathor, as a belly dancer, the supreme Ra as an omnipotent president, or Nephthys as an influencer.

Curator Srđan Tunić speaks with the artist about each individual god for Sumac Space in order to understand their past and contemporary image.
