In Taiwan, there is an old saying, “家醜不可外揚,” which means “What happens in the family stays in the family.” It could be a troubled childhood, past scars, or love affairs swept under the rug, left unsaid even among the people we care about most.

In this month’s Taiwan Docs film presentation, 《日常對話》 Small Talk, we invite you to dive into the story of director HUANG Hui-Chen and her mother, Ah-nu. For decades, Ah-nu raised her two kids alone as a priestess in traditional funeral rituals. She carried the heavy weight of survival in total silence, leaving an aching distance between mother and daughter. Through intimate conversations and interviews, HUANG gradually pieces together the puzzle of her mother’s hidden past, uncovering painful truths, unexpected love, and a path toward reconciliation.

It’s a story about family, identity, and the courage it takes to speak up. Come watch, reflect, and share your own stories with us!



HUANG Hui-Chen is an activist, documentary filmmaker, and a fulltime mom. Prior to embarking on her first feature length documentary, she worked for non-governmental organizations, advocating for labor rights and social justice. It was during this time that HUANG began documenting the plight of the disadvantaged and the voiceless, which eventually became tools used for social change.

Does this week's weather feel a little like Taiwan? 🔥🥵 We think it's a hint that it's time to join us for one of the most Taiwanese and romantic films of the year.

Fresh from its European premiere at the 2026 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), where all three screenings sold out and audiences praised it as one of their festival highlights, now comes to Berlin for two special screenings during MISS READ.

For more than ten years, production company Dreamland Images has documented Taiwan's independent bookstores through the long-running project Poetries from the Bookstores. What began as an effort to preserve a disappearing cultural landscape has become a remarkable cinematic portrait of how books, communities, and alternative ways of living continue to thrive.

Directed by HOU Chi-Jan, who returns to Rotterdam twenty years after his previous selection, the film takes us from city streets to mountain villages and coastal towns, where independent bookstores become places of culture, conversation, memory, and belonging.

European audiences were deeply moved by the film's portrayal of Taiwan's bookstore culture. Some left wanting to visit Taiwan for the first time. Others described the experience as feeling as if they had lived inside these bookstores themselves. One audience member simply called it:

🏳️‍🌈🎬 Pride Month with Taiwan Docs ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Boys for Beauty (美麗少年), Taiwan's first LGBTQ+ documentary to receive a theatrical release and a bold voice for the q***r community. Also the one and only chance to see it in Berlin.

This special pride month screening is also a tribute to filmmaker Mickey Chen ((陳俊志) , whose fearless work gave voice to LGBTQIA+ communities when visibility was still rare.



Released in 1999, Boys for Beauty became Taiwan's first LGBTQIA+ documentary to receive a theatrical release and only the second Taiwanese documentary ever shown in commercial cinemas.

Audiences packed cinemas to see something rarely seen before: young gay men living openly, beautifully, and unapologetically.

Through the lives of three teenagers in Taipei, director Mickey Chen (陳俊志) captured a generation searching for love, identity, and freedom in a society still shaped by traditional gender expectations. More than two decades later, the film remains a landmark work in Taiwanese q***r cinema.

This Pride Month screening is also an opportunity to look back at a pivotal moment in Taiwan's q***r history. Through Boys for Beauty, we revisit the lives, struggles, and freedoms of q***r youth in the late 1990s .

We also remember and celebrate the legacy of Mickey Chen, whose films, writing, and activism spoke loudly for the q***r community and helped open space for future generations to live more openly and authentically.

「柏林對我而言，也像是一座島。」2026年5月，在這個曾被分割屬於不同陣營、受到威權監控的德國城市裡，來自台灣40多年前、解嚴前後民主轉型關鍵歷史影像正在展出——

520農運、彰化反杜邦、桃園機場事件的紀實影像，影展則包含劇情片《大濛》與4部描繪台灣社會與產業進步的紀錄片，其中，導演鍾宜杰耗費四年完成的紀錄片《民主之眼》，透過400多張影像以及在80年代擔任第一線攝影記者的見證，提供縱觀視角。

現年56歲的鍾宜杰，曾是路透社攝影主任、自立報系攝影記者，他在解嚴初期入行，而片中訪談的謝三泰、潘小俠、蔡明德等人則早在戒嚴時期就站在第一線，「由這些人來談論當初採訪的經驗，跟他們對事件的看法，這樣會比較有說服力。」身兼《民主之眼》總顧問的謝三泰解釋。

當台灣命運翻頁那一刻，帶著相機鏡頭在街頭跟隨跑動的他們是紀錄者、是見證者，同時也是參與者——花時間心力追蹤報導政治犯，拒絕情治單位索要現場照片的電話，《人間》蔡明德回顧職涯堅定地說：「我沒有辜負我自己，也沒有辜負那個時代。」

然而數十年過去，相紙泛黃、跑新聞前輩漸漸老去，而社會記憶也變得模糊，20年前起擔任政大傳播學院兼任助理教授的鍾宜杰甚至遇到學生以「古代」形容80年代⋯⋯這些都成為製作紀錄片的動力，「我知道我如果沒有做，我一定會很遺憾。」最終目標是將《民主之眼》三部曲送進全國高中與大學校園，讓年輕世代更理解台灣過去的民主之路。

儘管距離目標仍有段距離，在為德國展覽剪輯100分鐘特映版後，鍾宜杰繼續投入電影版剪輯，預計加入台灣目前政治局勢與國內遭遇的重大困境等內容，讓觀影民眾感受到「過去發生的事情，其實跟現在息息相關。」這也是在德國策展「台灣民主與社會運動紀錄展」的葉子瑞，最想表達的意念：「台灣民主是亞洲極為珍貴的存在，而這份珍貴並不是憑空出現的。」

《報導者》特約記者黃文鈴專訪了《民主之眼》導演鍾宜杰、走過解嚴前後街頭的攝影記者謝三泰、蔡明德，以及紀錄展策展人葉子瑞。透過他們各自在現場按下快門的記憶，回望也思考這些三十多年前的民主化歷程影像，在當前這個資訊真假難辨的時代裡，能給我們什麼樣的提醒
