🎬 TFFBERLIN 2026 WRAPS UP WITH CHONG KEAT-AUN 張吉安

During the last two days of tffBerlin 2026, Director CHONG Keat-Aun 張吉安 joined us in Berlin in person and brought two of his feature films to TFFB 2026: The Story of Southern Islet 南巫 and our closing film Mother Bhumi 地母.

Across both screenings, he shared the stories behind the films, the ideas that shaped them, and the worlds they came from. On the final night, the Q&A just kept going - question after question, with audiences that clearly didn’t want the conversation to end.

That curiosity, openness and willingness to stay with a film beyond the credits is exactly what we hope for at TFFBerlin.

Thank you CHONG Keat-Aun 張吉安 for being with us, and thank you to everyone in the audience for giving us such a warm and memorable final night. 💚

🎬 DAY 7 Highlight｜Vive L’Amour 愛情萬歲 in 4K

For this screening, people were already arriving early, hanging around before the screening, chatting with each other, checking out the programme and also supporting us by picking up our TFFB tote bags.

Seeing the festival space slowly fill up before the film even started was really nice.

Then we screened TSAI Ming-Liang’s Vive L’Amour 愛情萬歲 - for the first time in Germany in its 4K restoration.

There was something special about watching a packed cinema experience a story set in 1990s Taipei together - quiet, awkward, funny, lonely, and still so relatable more than 30 years later.

The film originally won the Golden Lion and FIPRESCI Prize at Venice in 1994, as well as Best Narrative Feature at the Golden Horse Awards.

Thank you for coming early, staying with us, supporting the festival, getting our tote bags, and filling the cinema once again 💚

🎬 DAY 7 HIGHLIGHT｜TFFBerlin Shorts II

Another full house at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA for the second programme of our TFFBerlin Shorts competition! ❤️

This session brought together six films from a new generation of filmmakers working in Taiwan, moving between the afterlife, queerness, everyday routines, the body, relationships and the lasting impact of sexual violence - six very different approaches to how stories can be told through short film.

Director Pai Kuei Tsuen 白桂淳 joined us in person for a Q&A with our host TSAI I-Chieh Tsai, I-Chieh , and the conversation kept going with so many questions from the audience. Thank you for the curiosity and energy in the room last night. 🙂

And now the votes are in! 🗳️ We’ve collected the audience votes from our short film competition and will reveal the winners on 5 October.

🎬 SOLD-OUT Night At TFFB 2026 ❤️

Yesterday, TFFBerlin Shorts officially kicked off at SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA with a full house! 🎉

For our first short film competition screening, directors CHUNG Szu-Fan and HUANG Yi-Chen joined us in person for a Q&A with the curator Nils STEINMETZ , sharing how their stories developed, how they found their visual styles and storytelling approaches, and some of the ideas and experiences behind the films.

At the same time, two very different programmes were unfolding across Berlin.

🎞️ Family Matters 我家的事 brought us into a family story shaped by memory, secrets and relationships across different stages of life, while 🎭 Love and Duty 戀愛與義務 - Benshi & Experimental Cine-concert transformed a restored silent film into a live experience through Benshi narration and experimental music.

And somehow, all three programmes were SOLD OUT on the same night. ❤️

Three spaces, three completely different ways of experiencing cinema - and full audiences in every one of them.

🎬 DAY 4 & DAY 5｜RESTORATIONS, MASTERCLASS & A FULL CINEMA

Over these two days, TFFB moved between restored classics, contemporary cinema and conversations about filmmaking itself.

On 27 September, we began with Director Masterclass: Filming Histories That Resist Being Remembered.

With a small group of 12 participants, director LAU Kek-Huat 廖克發 shared his own journey into filmmaking - how he became a director, the obstacles he faced along the way, and what it means to keep working with difficult histories through cinema.

The evening continued with two very different films: the 4K restoration of The Legend of the Sacred Stone 聖石傳說, bringing Taiwanese glove puppetry back to the big screen, followed by The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon 周處除三害.

Then on 28 September, we returned to one of Taiwanese cinema’s major classics with the 2K restoration of TSAI Ming-Liang’s The River 河流.

Two days, two restorations, one masterclass, and another packed programme of stories, conversations and cinema. 💚

🎬 TFFB 2026 GOES ON TOUR! 🇹🇼🚆

For the first time, Taiwan Film Festival Berlin is travelling beyond Berlin.

Under this year’s theme FOLKTALE｜The Story We Invent to Survive, we’re bringing Taiwanese cinema to Munich, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Dresden with 9 screenings across four cities.

🎬 DAY 3｜From Documentary to Cinema to Live Performance

Day 3 of TFFB 2026 moved through documentary, memory, conversation and sound.

We started at P60 with Island of the Winds 大風之島 and an online Q&A with director HSU Ya-Ting 許雅婷, sharing the journey behind this 20-year project - how it developed over time and what may come next.

Then we returned to 2019 with Boluomi 菠蘿蜜 by LAU Kek-Huat 廖克發 & Vera CHEN 陳雪甄, followed by an on-site Q&A with LAU Kek-Huat and our audience.

And to close the day, YANG Yu-Chiao 楊雨樵 led five artists in the Berlin version of The House of Onomatopoeia - Berlin - where the audience became part of the performance, moving through a temporary house built from sound, memory and improvisation.

🎬 Meet the tffBerlin Short Jury 2026

Twelve short films. Two competition programmes. Three jury members.

The tffBerlin Shorts Competition returns with emerging filmmakers and new perspectives in contemporary Taiwanese cinema. Meet our 2026 jury:

EVELYN YANG Ling 楊羚 Evelyn Yang ｜Writer & Director

YANG Ling is a writer-director based in Taipei and a graduate of the Film MFA program at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Founder of BLACK SQUARE Ltd., she was selected for the 16th Golden Horse Film Academy.

She is developing her debut feature FLUID, supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and selected for the 2024 Sundance Asia Film Tank. Her short THE BLACK DOG was nominated for the Wide Angle: Asian Short Film Competition at the 29th Busan International Film Festival.

LEE Pei-Chin 李沛錦 Pei Chin Lee ｜Artist & Filmmaker

Hessen-based artist working across short films, immersive multi-channel video installations and feature-length film. Her debut documentary An Island was nominated for Best Documentary Film at the 2025 Hessischer Film- und Kinopreis.

Her works engage with Taiwan’s political and cultural context while exploring identity and the perception of time across diverse projection and exhibition formats.

WANG Zhi-Xiang 王智祥｜Writer & Director

A graduate of the MFA Program in Film Directing at Taipei National University of the Arts. Born in Fuzhou in 1996, he moved to Taiwan at 16 and founded Good Things Film Co., Ltd. His works often explore the world through children’s perspectives.

His short No Island in the Sea was selected for the 61st Golden Horse Film Festival and 30th Busan International Film Festival, and won Best Short Film at the Berlin-Taiwan Film Festival and the Taiwan Award at the Taiwan International Children’s Film Festival.

🎬 DAY 2 at Taiwan Film Festival Berlin 2026

We started the day with TKT, bringing together food, culture, and community, before moving into the cinema for 白衣蒼狗 Mongrel.

Later, we shifted from film to sound with 《狀聲詞的家屋》The House of Onomatopoeia Workshop, led by Taiwanese narrative and sound artist YANG Yu-Chiao 楊雨樵. Through listening, writing, voice, and memories of home, participants created sounds and words that would become part of The House of Onomatopoeia - Berlin live performance.

We were also very honoured to welcome 谷瑞生 KU Jui-sheng, Representative of the Taipei Representative Office in the Federal Republic of Germany, together with his guests. A special thank you for joining us at both TKT and the screening of Mongrel, and for showing your support for the festival, our filmmakers, artists, and community.

From the market to the cinema, from film to sound - Day 2 brought together many different ways of meeting, listening, experiencing, and sharing stories.

🎬 TFFB 2026 IS IN FULL SWING ❤️

We began this year’s festival with a sold-out cinema for The Waves Will Carry Us 人生海海.

Once again, the trust our audience places in the stories we bring to Berlin filled the house - and hearing laughter travel through the cinema made the night even more special.

The screening continued with a wonderful conversation with director LAU Kek-Huat 廖克發, setting the tone for the days ahead. 💚
