SOUTH AFRICA! IS THIS WHO WE ARE?

Shops looted. Vehicles burned. People left to count what they have lost.

Who pays when a small shop is emptied? Who loses work when a business cannot reopen? If the anger is directed at government, why are people and their livelihoods being attacked?

And when the crowds leave, who stays behind to rebuild?

We have every right to question government decisions and demand answers. We also have a responsibility to protect one another. Looting, arson and attacks cannot be the answer.

DJS: THE MOST DISRESPECTED ARTISTS

Berlin’s DJs keep the nights alive—but too many are treated like pawns in the game of clubs, bars and festivals.

They’re expected to bring the crowd, build the atmosphere and keep the room moving. Then the night ends and the payment is delayed, reduced, or never comes. The respect can be missing too: no proper communication, no decent hospitality, no recognition of the work behind the set.

Sometimes it feels like everyone around the DJ is valued more than the DJ: the bar staff get paid on time, the venue makes its money, the party gets its content—and the person creating the soundtrack is left chasing what they were promised.

DJs are artists. Their time, talent and labour deserve fair pay and basic respect.

Before the arenas and big competitions, there was the township street, a BMW, a crowd and the smoke.

Car spinning grew in South Africa’s townships, especially Soweto. Some accounts trace its early roots to 1980s street culture and funeral tributes. By the early 1990s, a new generation of drivers was shaping it into a performance of control, precision and stunts.

Then came the Gusheshe. The BMW 325i became the scene’s signature car, its name and presence now woven into South African car culture. And spinning is its own show: skill and spectacle take centre stage.

Over time, the scene found more organised arenas. Motorsport South Africa recognised spinning as a motorsport code in 2014, and competitions helped bring the drivers’ skill to wider audiences. Women drivers are also making their mark in the sport.

From township roots to packed arenas, spinning has grown into a homegrown motorsport with its own sound, style and stars.

GOVERNMENT SETS DEADLINES AFTER EKURHULENI KILLINGS

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced four immediate measures against gender-based violence and femicide.

Within 60 days, authorities must audit unresolved cases, identify delayed investigations and present a funded plan to reduce forensic backlogs.

Municipalities must also identify dangerous public spaces, including broken streetlights, abandoned buildings, unsafe transport routes and poorly secured parks.

Within 90 days, recovery plans must be created for stalled priority cases. Urgent public hazards must either be fixed or included in funded plans with clear deadlines.

The first consolidated progress report is also due within 90 days, followed by public updates every quarter.

The deadlines now exist. The public must track whether they are met.

MAXHOSA AFRICA™ x MAXHOSA LIFESTYLE has made fashion history.

Led by Laduma Ngxokolo , the label became the first South African brand to stage a full runway show on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar.

The collection carried South African craft onto a global stage. Its knitwear was made locally using South African wool, with production in Johannesburg and East London.

Xhosa-inspired geometry shaped the designs, while Sjava Indlalifa provided the soundtrack.

This was more than a fashion show. It was a statement about African creativity, manufacturing and luxury on its own terms.

What could this moment unlock for the next generation of African designers?

🏃🏽‍♀️ BERLIN MARATHON: THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE RACE

Tomorrow, more than 56,000 runners are expected to take on Berlin’s streets. Across the full weekend, over 84,000 people from 162 nations are expected to participate.

The impact reaches far beyond the finish line. A study of the 2024 event counted more than 200,000 people accompanying participants, with 71% coming from outside Berlin. It estimated €469.4 million in economic impact, including spending that reached the city’s hotels, restaurants and shops.

Those tourism and economic figures are from 2024, not a forecast for tomorrow. But they show what this race can mean for the whole city.

To everyone running, volunteering, cheering or working this weekend: Berlin is moving with you. ❤️

TWO CHARGED IN EKURHULENI KILLING. EIGHT CASES STILL NEED ANSWERS.

Two women have been charged in connection with the murder of one of nine women found dead in Ekurhuleni. It is a development in the investigation, but police have not linked the accused to the other eight killings.

For the families still waiting, this cannot be treated as the end of the story. Each woman deserves to be remembered, each case investigated, and each family given answers.

What concrete steps should authorities and communities take to make women safer?
